INTRODUCTION:-

Nowadays, street lighting systems in industries or cities are growing rapidly.

The important considerations in the field of different technologies like electrical
and electronics are cost effective, automation and power consumption. There
are different street lighting systems are developed to maintain and control the
lighting systems. These lighting systems are used to control and decrease energy
consumption. Street light controlling is one of the most developing system in
India to conserve the energy.
Generally the street light in the cities is programmed automatically and i.e. they
go on glowing continuously throughout the night and switched off during day
time. But during the night time if there is no traffic street light is not necessary.
Saving of this energy is very important factor these days as energy resources are
getting reduced day by day. Alternatives for natural resources are very less and
our next generation may face a lot of problem due to lack of these natural
resources. This project gives a solution for saving the energy by detecting an
approaching vehicle by turning ON the street lights. As the vehicle passes away
from the street light, then the lights get turn OFF. If there are no vehicles on the
road, then all the lights will turn OFF.
Street Light National Programme (SLNP) is an initiative of the Government to
promote energy efficiency in the country. Government aims to replace 3.5 crore
conventional street lights with energy efficient LED lights. This would result in
annual energy saving of 900 crore units and the total cost savings of
municipalities every year will be Rs 5,500 crore. Energy Efficiency Services
Limited (EESL), a Public Energy Services Company under the administration
of Ministry of Power, Government of India (GoI) is the implementing agency
for SLNP. The National Programme has been launched on 5th January 2015 to
convert conventional street and domestic lights with energy efficient LED
lights.
This project is installed in Kolkata by New Town Kolkata Development
Authority (NKDA). A one km stretch parallel to Bagjola canal connecting the
main arterial road near Alia university and Amity university. 39 light poles, 80
LED poles and 52 street lights are connected to automatic sensor. Rs. 2 lakh
estimated amount to be saved per year.
Literature Review:-
1)Automatic Street Light Control by Detecting Vehicle Movement (Prathib
Kumar G, Yashaswini N, Yashaswini S) Student, Raghu N Assistant
Professor Electrical and Electronics Dept. School of Engineering and
Technology, Jain University, Bangalore.
This paper shows the design to detect the vehicle movement on roadways to
switch ON just a block of road lights in front of it, and to turn OFF the trailing
lights. There is another method of operation where instead of turning OFF the
lights totally, they stay ON with 10% intensity of the light. As the vehicle
approaches, the block of road light change to 100% intensity and as the vehicle
moves forward, the trailing lights return to 10% intensity again. The model
consists of light emitting diode (LED) as street lights and photodiodes or
infrared diodes utilized as sensors, variable resistors and transistors which work
as switch. The infrared diodes are set on side of the street and photodiodes are
set on the opposite side of the street.

This paper illustrates to minimize the consumption of electricity used by the
street lights, by controlling the intensity of light. Initially, there will be detection
of day and night. It is detected by using Light Dependent Resistor (LDR), when
its sense the darkness as intensity of daylight diminishes the resistance of LDR
will increase and after threshold level Arduino will detect night mode. During
peak hours consider 6pm to 12pm traffic density is high so during this interval
LED lamps will be working a full intensity (100%).

3)Review on Vehicle Movement based Street Lights (Mohd Azaz, Lucky

Gangwar, Mohit Singh, Mubashshir) Student, Dr. Farooq Husain Associate
Professor Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering,
Moradabad Institute of Technology Moradabad India
This paper illustrates a street light system based on vehicle movement. India
faces a major problem regarding power consumption and power production.
This paper presents an idea on how power consumption can be reduced in the
street light systems using laser source as sensor and PIC microcontroller.
LASER sensors are implanted at a distance away from the street light systems
which detects the vehicle and street light then glows. Until then, street light will
be in dim state. Thus this proposed system helps in saving a lot of energy. A
programmable microcontroller controls light intensity according to the need.
4) Street Light Glows On Detecting The Vehicle Movement using Arduino
UNO by Ritam Sahu, Moyuri Shil, Rimpi Datta, Piyu Sarcar ECE, Narula
Institute of Technology, Kolkata, India
This paper proposes how street light can be controlled in the presence or
absence of vehicle to reduce the wastage of energy. The proposed work is
accomplished by using Arduino UNO and sensors that will control the
electricity based on night and object's detection. Meanwhile, a counter is set that
will count the number of objects passed through the road. When there is not any
vehicle in front of the IR sensor module, the receiver can’t get any infrared
signal. So the circuit remain in open loop condition and the lights are in of
condition. When there is any vehicle in front of the IR sensor module, the
receiver get the infrared signal. So the circuit is in close loop condition and the
lights are in on condition with respect to the IR module. If the car blocks the
first IR sensor, the first three LEDs are turned ON by the microcontroller. As
the car moves forward and blocks the second IR sensor, the corresponding next
three LEDs will be turned ON and the first LED of the previous set is turned
OFF. The process continues this way for all the IR Sensors and LEDs.

5)Street Light That Glows on Detecting Vehicle Movement (Aravind

Sriram, Praveen Kumar. D, Vishnudharansini. S) Student, Assistant
Professor, CSE, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, Tamil
Nadu, India.
A large amount of electricity of many towns and cities is being expended in the
all night street lighting systems. Street lighting systems are indeed very
necessary, but in most of the areas the traffic density is very low during the late
hours and midnight, there would be a huge waste of electricity resulting from
such places if the streetlights are left unused. The main objective of this paper is
to save energy, and by doing so we would be able to lighten few more houses.
In this paper we are focus to reduce the wastage of unused electricity by using
automatic street light based on vehicle detection. This system uses a
microcontroller (Arduino) to switch on the streetlights depending on the vehicle
or object detection. Also, since the lights don’t stay on the whole night, the
lifetime of the streetlights gets enhanced.
6) Intelligent Street Lights Y M Jagadeesha , S Akilesha , S Karthika,
Prasantha “Panimalar Engineering College, Chennai -600 123, India”
In today’s world, more amount of electricity is consumed due to street lights.
This is due to continuous operation of lighting during the night time. In order to
reduce the electricity consumption and wastage of energy, the system that has to
combine the existing network with intelligence to think itself. This newly
developed concept will enable the street lights to adjust automatically based on
the real time traffic conditions and change according to naturalistic condition
(Full moon). This paper is concerned with the development and implementation
of Low cost Sensor based Street Lights with dynamic which in turn reduces the
energy consumption and CO2 emission. It consists of IR sensor, PIR sensors,
low cost embedded controller and storage device.

7)Automated Street Lighting System T. Santhi Sri, Rajesh Varma, V VS.

Hari Krishna, K. Varun Chowdary
Smart Street light is a robotized framework which automate the road. The
primary point of Smart Street light is to reduce the power utilization when there
are no vehicle moments on road. The Smart road light will turn to be ON when
there are vehicles out and about generally the lights will be turned OFF. With
improvement in technology, things are getting to be easier and simpler for
everybody around the world today. Robotization is the utilization of control
frameworks and information technologies to decrease the requirement for
human work in the production of services and enterprises. In the extent of
industrialization, robotization is a stage past mechanization, though
motorization gave human operators apparatus to help the clients with the solid
prerequisites of work, robotization enormously diminishes the requirement for
human sensory and mental requirements also. Automation play a vital job on
the world’s economy and in day by day experience. Programmed frameworks
are being favored over manual framework. The experimental work demonstrates
programmed control of streetlights because of which control is spared to a
degree. The Smart road light gives an answer for energy recusing and saving
which is accomplished by detecting a moving toward vehicle utilizing the IR
sensors and after that exchanging ON a block of road lights in front of the
vehicle. As the vehicle moves by, the street lights turn OFF naturally.
Subsequently, we save a great deal of energy. So at the point when there are no
vehicles on the roadway, at that point every one of the lights stay OF.
Objectives:-
The objectives of project re as follows:
1. The project aims at saving energy by detecting the vehicle movement on
highways and switching on the block of street light ahead of it and
simultaneously off the trailing lights.
2. To promote energy efficiency and the balanced use of energy resources.
3. To reduce CO2 emissions.
4. To make traffic and obstructions on the road clearly visible in order to
promote safety and convenience.
5. As headlight sight distance is not sufficient for the driver to clearly
visible maximum distance obstruction so to overcome this difficulty this
project will help.
Methodology:-
1. Selection of topic:
Firstly we have gone though three topics i.e. fiber reinforced concrete,
plastic bottle bricks and intelligent transport system. Out of these three
we have finalized intelligent transport system. As this is very vast so we
have selected a sub topic which is „vehicular movement actuated street
light system‟.

2. Searching review paper:

We have gone through a number of review papers and finally choose six
out of them. Which are as mentioned above.

3. Gathering information from them:

Each one of us read one review paper and gathered information from
them which is useful for our project.

4. Noting down the important points:

We have done research about the previous work done on the topic and
about the micro controllers used in the topic as well.

5. Understanding the importance of the project:

we read the objectives of the previous papers and understood the
importance and scope of the project in today’s world and its role in
conservation of electricity as well as safety.

6. Analyzing the working of model:

We analyzed the working of microcontrollers used in the previous project
such as PIC16F877A and Arduino.

7. Come to an end by perceiving conclusion of review paper:

We concluded that it is economical as well as energy efficient.

Future Scope:-
Further the project can be enhanced by using appropriate sensors for detecting
the failed street light and then sending an SMS to the control department via
GSM modern for appropriate action. This system can be connected to
communication devices such as GSM, cellular phones or satellite terminal to
enable the remote collection for recorded data or alarming of certain parameters.
