Your Learning Space

Have a dedicated study area in your place. This maybe your home or a
relative’s home. Whatever it is, make it work for you, and try to minimize
distractions. This will be your “classroom”.

Thinking About Your Goals

Develop your study goals. What do you want to get from your course?
Maybe you want to improve your study habit, or make use of your time
for education during the pandemic period.

Assignments and Deadlines

Look over each week in the syllabus. Make note of all lessons and
activities. Use a calendar to chart your assignments and due dates. Utilize
your handouts and resources. You have fourteen (14) weeks to complete
this course, covering the entire term.

Do Your Work
Complete all of your assignments and projects. Treat this as you would
in a physical classroom, with your instructor, group mates/ classmates
relying on you to complete your work. Finish your projects.

Ask for Help

Do not hesitate to reach out to your instructor for more information or
clarification on an assignment. Your group leader will also assist you
although you cannot meet them face to face. There are many possible
ways and means to communicate nowadays. But of course, you have to
help yourself first. READ. You might have overlooked the ANSWER TO
YOUR QUESTION; it might be indicated already in the module.

Distance Learning Method allows you to be responsible for your own

success. Ultimately, it is up to YOU to stay organized, manage your time,
and complete all assignments and activities on time. With learner
autonomy, you will develop critical thinking and enhance your values and
discipline toward learning.

should be able to make insights on how the arts influence the community
and the society, and to reflect on how you, as an individual person, are
influenced by the art, by the things that you like, and by the things that
surround you.

Russian artist Salavat Fidai’s series of micro sculptures take his skills into an
extraordinary step further by carving out tiny details using graphite as medium from
the tiny lead of a pencil. His latest series features icons from Game of Thrones.

The coverage of the topics in this course is translated in these questions:

A picture paints a
thousand words; What is the work of art about?
The SUBJECT of the art answers this question. The sources of art subject
Words create a can be people, object, scene or event. These may be real or a subject of
million subjects. fiction. What is being represented in a work of art is called a “subject”.

What is it for?
This refers to the FUNCTION of the art. Arts that have no subject may
have their PHYSICAL FUNCTION. Crafts made by artisans have tangible
functions. Houses, buildings, bridges, and structures make Architecture
as the most functional art. When art tends to influence the collective
behavior of people for cause, such as advertisements, movies, and other
media arts, such function of art is called SOCIAL FUNCTION.

What is it made of?

While some arts have no subject, all form of arts have MEDIUM. There is
no art without medium because it is the way by which an artist
communicates an idea. Architecture makes use of construction materials;
painting makes use of colored pigments on canvas; music makes use of
instruments; and literature makes use of language as its medium.
ART APP MODULE PREPARED BY: ANGELICA F OLIVAR

How is it put together?

This refers to the ELEMENTS of the arts, such as line, shape, form, color,
texture, value, and perspective. Music and literature have sense and
sound as their elements.

What is its mood and personality?

Every art has its STYLE and an artist has a TECHNIQUE in doing so. A
musician can do a lot of technique playing an instrument, thus creating
different sounds. A writer or composer may play on words and rhythm.
An advertiser may impart social awareness in its art.

Is it good?
We are consciously and unconsciously having our values shaped by the
art around us. We pass judgment and express opinions about art, we are
all critics of the arts. Judging an art may be done objectively by
considering the concepts behind these questions. Understanding the
criteria under subject, medium, elements and function, one may
objectively judge that an art is indeed good.

Answering these questions summarizes the entire concepts of the arts.

7

The Arts generally refers to VISUAL ARTS, MUSIC, LITERATURE, ARCHITECTURE, DANCE,
THEATER, and the likes.

There are two TYPES of art – visual and auditory. Painting, sculpture, architecture, tapestry,
glassware, woodcrafts are a few examples of visual arts. Music and Literature are auditory arts.
Literature is considered an auditory art since words were believed to be uttered first through sound.
While letters have corresponding symbols, it is said that in the beginning, “words” were spoken
and heard first before they were written and read - just like the cry of a newborn baby and the
storytelling of our ancestors and grandparents.

Visual arts may also be called SPACE ARTS, because they actually occupy space or area as
we see them. They may be real, actual, physical or tangible things such as a miniature art or the
smallest graphite sculpture where the lead of the pencil is carved. Architecture, on the other hand,
may be considered as the art that occupies a large space. Visual arts may also be virtual as seen on
digital technology gadgets or media arts.

Auditory arts may also be called

TIME ARTS, because they last
through times and can be passed
on from generations to
generations. They are not

physical things and their primary
purpose in the art is social function.

Art constitutes one of the oldest and most important means of

expressions developed by man. The oldest painting created by man
was discovered in Altamira cave in north of Spain. The earliest
hieroglyphic script was used in the walls of temples and tombs in
Egypt. The Tabon Caves in southern Palawan served as proof of our
heritage with our Austronesian-speaking ancestors upon the
“Bison” from Altamira cave paintings discovery of Neolithic burial site in the Manunggul cave of Tabon.
