Non-Conformity Report For Rate of Loading of UTM
Non-Conformity Report For Rate of Loading of UTM
Non-Conformance Report
For
Rate of Loading of Universal Testing Machine
(UTM) for Tensile Testing of Steel
& Training of Testing Personnel
Non-conformance: During Tensile testing, no evidence that loading rate is controlled
as required by cl 10.3.3 table 3. Also testing personnel is not aware of this requirement.
Laboratory Response:
For materials having Modulus of Elasticity less than 150,000 MPa, the stress rate shall
be maintained in the range of minimum 2 MPa/s to maximum 20 MPa/s.
1. The technician weighed each bar, followed by measuring of the length of the
bar specimen. The general details such as Make of the bar, Grade and Bar
Mark were noted for identification purposes.
2. The bar was then clamped in the UTM, necessary markings and values entered
in the software and the test commenced.
3. A stopwatch was used to determine the time taken by the specimen to reach
failure.
4. Load was gradually applied by the testing engineer and the specimen tested till
occurrence of failure.
5. The failure load in kN and Stress in MPa was noted along with the time elapsed
from the start of application of load to the point of failure of the specimen.
6. The rate of loading in MPa/sec was then derived at by dividing the Stress in
MPa with the time elapsed in seconds.
The result sheet for the test along with supporting photographs and UTM datasheets
are as follows:
GAYATRI GEOTECHNIC RESEARCH
Determination of Rate of Loading for UTM Machine
9 16 1.57 1020 TMX 500 Fe500 Gallant 144.48 736.842 186 3.96
10 16 1.569 1003 TMT 500 Fe500 Tridev 141.32 709.189 103 6.89
Based on the results of the test, it can be observed that the Rate of Loading varies
between a minimum observed value of 3.96 MPa/sec to a maximum observed value
of 10.38 MPa/sec. These values are hence within the specified stress rate mentioned
in IS 1608 Part 1: 2022, Clause 10.3.3. Table 3, which requires the stress rate to be
maintained in the range of minimum 2 MPa/s to maximum 20 MPa/s.
Hence, it can be concluded that the machine satisfies the stress rate limits stated in
the applicable standard.
