DOSSIER N°1
FASHION/DIOR

This dossier is composed of two documents :

One article entitled “Women’s Rights and revolution Take Centerstage at Dior” adapted from the website
www.elle.com and written by NIKKI OGUNNAIKE on February 27, 2018.
It deals with revolution and feminism at the core of the fashion world. Indeed, Dior gets inspired and created a
new collection and shows in order to share gender equality, roles and rights. Furthermore, this document shows
how real-world issues have consequences on fashion world, people’s attitude, even in advertisements .

The second document is a picture from a Dior show included in Elle magazine, in Fall 2018.In the foreground, we
can see a model who is parading on a catwalk.
The background is blurred but we can distinguish the public watching the show behind her, on the left and on the
right.
The model wearing a black cap, pink sunglasses. She has an oversize pullover with the inscription “It’s no no no
and no ”, and an oversize checked pant. Finally, she is wearing black boots.
Her look gives her an androgynous and manly style. We cannot see her hair, she has no accessories. Her posture is
very masculine too, with her arms along her body. She seems nonchalant.

These two documents deal with real-world issues at the core of commercialization and how it have an impact on
society and culture. The picture is a representation of this impact on fashion world, because mentality is on a
continually changing, clothes are too. More precisely, the revolution against sexual harassment is present on the
“it’s no no no and no” pullover and responds to the Times Up and MeToo movements.
Besides, the model appropriates the masculine gender through her outfit and attitude (nonchalant, oversize
clothes, cap), promoting gender equality (as Chiuri wanted to). Chiuri wants women to do everything that man can
do, including wearing manly clothes. In short, he breaks the gender code and the image of the classic feminine
beauty ; no accessories on the picture except glasses, hidden hair by the cap (hair is absolute representation of
femininity), body shape are less put forward in favour of extravagance. Because it is extravagant and uncommon,
it could shake up people’s minds and customs.
To conclude, even if making profit on it is questionable, Dior encourages women to rebel as well as women
inspired Dior.
I have personally come to the same conclusion, except that it may be counterproductive for people who are
following this stylish revolution just because they find it trendy without thinking about the topic behind the outfit.
Furthermore, some industries use major world issues just in order to make profit. I doubt it is moral .
