MODULE #1: POPULATION AND RELATED


ISSUES
Overview

In this module, you will learn about the word population. But what does it mean? It is typically referred to the
number of people in a single area, whether it be a city or town, region, country, or the world. Governments
usually quantify the size of the resident population within their jurisdiction using a census, a process of
collecting, analyzing, compiling, and publishing data regarding a population. In sociology and population
geography, population refers to a group of human beings with some predefined criterion in common, such as
location, race, ethnicity, nationality, or religion.

Learning Outcomes (3 Domains)

After the completion of this module, students are expected to:

1. explain demographic changes in the world and their major determinants;


2. apply demographic concepts and population theories to explain past and present population
characteristics; and
3. evaluate the use of demographic concepts and population theories to understand contemporary socio-
economic issues and current affairs.

*Population Structure
*Population Distribution of the Phil.
*Implications of rapid population Growth

Objectives: (3 domains)
1. To provide knowledge and understanding of the prevailing situation.

2. Create awareness among the students about population matters, environment, and supply and demand of
essential commodities.

3. Provide necessary skill to evaluate the impact and consequence of population growth on society.

Assessments that will be used after watching and reading the articles will be examinations, drawing a concept
map of how migration of the populace takes place, and comparing of census data with administrative statistics
and household surveys. Less difficulty, of course.
