understand spoken words and decode written words, and
culminates in the deep understanding of text. Reading is
a skill, which is the ground of almost all processes of
learning and its necessary for students to acquire.
Based on the pre assessment in reading that we
conducted, some of our pupils can recognized letters and
letter sounds, can read simple words and sentences but
sadly the percentage of pupils who cannot read at all was
high. This provides the best opportunity to encourage
teachers, parents and guardians to take a greater role in
children's when it comes to reading.

We vehemently believed that once this skill was

acquired, the learner can attain full language literacy,
which includes the abilities to apply to printed material
critical analysis, inference, and synthesis; to write with
accuracy and coherence; and to use information and
insights from text as the basis for informed decisions and
creative thought.

In the realization of our Application Project, 116

Grade 1 learners shall directly benefit from it. Project
WASP( Wastong Alalay Sa Pagbabasa) shall be used as an

intervention material.

As this project progresses, it is envisioned that

more innovative programs through research shall be
conducted at Bani Elementary School in order to find
solutions to problems and issues encountered in school
particularly reading, learners’ achievement rate, parent
involvement and stakeholders participation.

Parent Involvement can also be applied and
strengthened the project through follow up at home.
Bani Elementary School is one of the well-known
schools in Masinloc, Zambales because of the built power
plant that provides livelihood to the community. Most of
the parents are working here, some are farmers and
fishermen to sustain the needs of the family.

The pandemic has led the children to struggle in
learning especially in reading through distant learning.
Due to parents busy schedule, they cannot allot time for
their children in reading. Some parents did not finish
their studies thus it becomes difficult for them to teach
their children at home especially the young ones.
Records show that Grade 1 learners has number
of slow and non-reader. As teachers assigned in this
department, we would like to take a step to help the
children learn how to read by reading remediation and
monitoring parent’s follow up at home.

Based on the Early Registration report, 116

learners have been enrolled in Grade 1. Half of the
learners did not attend limited face-to-face classes due to
the present health crisis.

Through Project WASP, it is our hope that these

116 grade learners will complete their course and become
readers.

3. Different instructional materials will be developed.
4. Partnership with parents will be strengthened.
The beneficiaries will be the following:
1. The 116 identified grade 1 learners
2. The parents and guardian of 116 identified learners.
This project will be a success when the following indicators
have been achieved and verified through unbiased means
(maximum of 3):
