Construction Waste
Management
Construction - Waste Management

• Avoid construction, demolition and land clearing debris

from reaching landfills
Construction - Waste Management

The site contractor / PMC should consider following measures:

1. Consider recycling land clearing debris, cardboard, metals, brick,
concrete, plastic, clean wood, glass, gypsum wall board, carpet, and
insulation etc.
2. Designate a specific area on the construction site for recycling wherein
all the construction waste are collected and segregated properly
(Steel, Construction waste debris, Empty Cement bags, Cardboards,
Empty Paint cans, etc…)
3. Try to sell off the scraps to authorized dealers. Also try to ensure that
vendors send the scraps for recycling.
4. In the tender documents you can include proper disposal of scraps in
the scope of vendor themselves.
5. Track recycling efforts throughout the construction process.

2. Description of how the particular waste was handled
3. Challans, Bills and Record of the diverted waste with the
quantity

4. Photographs of how the waste was stored at site.

5. Photographs of segregated waste.
6. Photographs during loading or diverting of waste away from site.

Regional, Recycled and
Local Materials
Recycled & Regional Materials

Recycled Materials:
• Use Materials with recycled content such
that total recycled content value is more
than 20% of the entire material cost
• Materials to be included: Steel, Cement,
Glass, Blocks, Bricks, tiles, wood,
aggregates, aluminium

Regional Materials:  Documents:

• Ensure that more than 40% of total • Manufacturer Certificates
materials are being manufactured within • Master Material Sheet
400 Km radius.

Local Materials

• Prepare a master material sheet listing all

civil materials

• List down vendors name, quantity and cost

(excluding labour) of all the materials

• Take declaration letter for each material

stating the following
– % Recycled content in the material
– Mention the distance of manufacturing
site of the materials from the project
site in Kms (less than 500 Kms)

• Exclude MEP equipments/materials

Construction IAQ
Management-
Recommended as a Green
practice
GreenPro Certified
Materials
GreenPro Certified Materials

GreenPro Certiifed Materials:

• Use atleast 5 Materials which are
GREENPRO certified
• Materials to be included: Tiles, Paint,
Glass, Ceiling, Furniture, Insulation etc.
The same can be selected from the IGBC
list of Greenpro certified materials.

 Documents:
• Greenpro Certificates
• Purchase orders
Construction IAQ Management
Civil and HVAC contractors shall ensure proper IAQ are maintained during
construction

Prevent indoor air quality problems resulting from the construction / renovation
process in order to help sustain the comfort and well-being of construction workers
and building occupants

The IAQ management plan should be completed before beginning of construction &
should include construction related IAQ procedures in pre-construction &
construction progress meeting agendas.
The recommended measures are as follows:-
1. HVAC protection
2. Source control
3. Pathway interruption
4. Housekeeping
5. Scheduling
Construction IAQ Management
1. HVAC PROTECTION
i. Ideally, permanently installed HVAC equipments like Chillers, Air Handlers etc
should not be used during the construction process as it can cause
contamination of the HVAC system. The same should be properly covered up
to ensure that it will remain free from Dust and Grime during the
construction.
ii. Dedicated places should be assigned for storage of ducting materials & HVAC
Equipments. Equipments mentioned above should be stored in such a place
such that it will not be impacted by the dust, debris, water and other
contaminants.
iii. Coating on ductwork, internal insulation should be checked for dusts before
installation.
iv. Duct Ends have to be covered by plastic sheets. Covering should be a good
quality Plastic sheet or a Tarpaulin.
v. Ducts open ends and overnight pending works should be properly sealed
which in turn will be tied firmly with String or Chord.
vi. The filtration medium during construction must have a rating of MERV 8 or
better.

from dust and equipment
Protection
Construction IAQ Management
2. SOURCE CONTROL
Containers and other materials housing toxic content such as paints, sealants, adhesives,
composite wood, carpets, etc should be covered & isolated, and in some cases separately
ventilated.

Photographs show proper

storage of VOC emitting
(paints, adhesives, etc) and
absorbing materials (glass
wool, insulation, carpet,
etc)
Construction IAQ Management
3. PATHWAY INTERRUPTION
i. Areas of work should be isolated to prevent contamination of clean or
occupied spaces, during construction.
ii. Temporary barriers should be used to prevent dust entry from
construction site to finished areas.
iii. Also material storage and stacking should be done that they do not
interrupt the pathways for ongoing construction work. Movement
should be avoided from construction areas to finished areas.

Provision of Temporary Barriers

Construction IAQ Management
4. HOUSEKEEPING
i. All construction workers should be provided with dust control masks to prevent from
health hazards. Indoors cleanliness should be maintained at all time during
construction.
ii. All electrical panels should be covered with water proofing covers to protect from
water entry.
iii. All moisture absorbing agents like carpets, furniture, adhesives, sealants, cements
etc. should be stored in moisture proof dry room.

Electrical equipments properly covered Proper cleaning ensured

Building materials stacked properly

Construction IAQ Management
5. SCHEDULING
i. All construction activities over the duration of the project should be sequenced carefully to
minimize the impact on the indoor air quality.
ii. Upon completion of construction, replace all filtration media immediately prior to
occupancy, installing only a single set of final filtration media.

Whole Building Flush-out before occupancy

1. After Construction before occupancy,
Flush-out should be carried out to avoid
problems due to poor indoor air quality
which can impact the health and well
being of the occupants.
2. Flush-out should be carried out by MERV
8 filters and shall be replaced by new one
before occupancy.
3. Flush-out should be carried out by 100%
fresh air, blocking the return air
completely and keeping all the operable
Paint work completed before installation of carpets. windows open.
