SOCIAL MEDIA IN EDUCATION
Social media can be highly useful for students’ learning by linking them to
professionals of areas they are interested in, and exposing them to various views and
cultures. Students can learn about the value of online privacy, branding, and self-
representation by using social media. If students use social media sites during class, it
can be a significant distraction for them. Even if they don't have their phones with them
in class, they can still be thinking about a post they saw at break when they go back to
class. Social media promotes self-directed learning, which prepares students to search
for answers and make decisions independently. When reinforced in a classroom setting,
these social media skills can be guided and refined to produce better learning outcomes
and critical awareness.

How social media affect in education ,It may have an impact on students'
communication skills because some may start employing the colloquial social media
lingo in their academic work. Even terms like "the" and "you" may be shortened to "d"
and "u," respectively. This makes it more difficult for them to learn how to communicate
in real life using appropriate grammar and spelling. It may also develop an addiction,
When someone becomes dependent on something, they are unable to live without it.
For any student who relies primarily on social media for learning, this might be highly
harmful. Because they know they can always use social media to get any information,
some students might not even pay attention in class. This is unhealthy because they
won't be able to function without it. Because they can easily replace in-person
interactions with their teachers and peers with the use of a social media app, this
addiction can also negatively affect the students' self-esteem and confidence. This can
prevent them from developing the confidence to connect with people in real life. Lack of
ability to learn independently, One of the biggest drawbacks of social media in
education is that it allows students to collaborate in groups and even start group
conversations, so they are no longer need to work alone. This may cause some of the
students to slouch in the background and not actively contribute to the group project.
Since group work can give some students the chance to develop a tendency toward
laziness and an unwillingness to complete tasks independently, this can even prevent
them from working on their own unique thoughts and ideas.

Benefits of Using Social Media in Education - Social media as a

communication channel Effective communication between students and teachers is
crucial. Teaching and learning will be challenging if there is poor communication.
Students can connect with friends, classmates, teachers, family members, and other
students online. Instead of being passive consumers of information, it encourages
students to actively participate in class. Online Learning and Networking - The era of
traditional education is over since almost all of the top e-learning websites now actively
push social networking. You can learn from the e-learning website as a student and ask
questions on numerous social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram,
YouTube, etc. Social media as an engagement tool - Students' engagement can be
raised by using social media platforms. Millions of people around the world have been
captured by social media; the same thing can be done to alert students to the
educational opportunities offered by their academic institutions. Teachers and students
can exchange information and materials via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or YouTube.
For creative demonstration - Students and teachers can express themselves and
display their skills using social media. It enables students to express themselves in a
variety of ways, including by publishing pictures, blogs, articles, videos, and audio
snippets. This gives pupils the chance to discover their skills and open doors for them in
the future. Improved Literacy, Communication, and Reading Skills - Students are known
to get easily bored while reading and writing. However, social media offers a plenty of
online content that students are more likely to read. There is a never-ending list of
online messages, comments, news, articles, and eBooks to read. Students will benefit
from this as they learn.

Social media generally benefits students greatly in the development of their

learning, thinking, and social skills. There are other benefits such as ease of sharing
and dispersing information. Social networking tools are vital to connecting learning
groups and improving learning methods. Social media is very important in all fields
whether it is education or any other field. So the first question arises, what is social
media. Social media is the set of various applications and websites that makes user
share information and knowledge and anything. Social media is a very interactive
