Ukraine should not Join NATO

Good morning, good afternoon or good evening, My name Is Jan Eli Nicoli Jardin I am on the
affirmative side and I am here to present the motion: I believe that Ukraine should not or
should not be allowed to join the NATO alliance. Firstly, the dilemma lies within the article 5
which states that whenever a member state of NATO gets attacked by a foreign force, the
entire alliance is therefore compelled to response militarily. With Ukraine joining NATO, the
mere action of joining can easily trigger a global war between NATO countries and Russia.
Everything that NATO stands for which is global security and peacekeeping shall be forfeited.
Secondly, I am going to present the following reasons on why NATO should not be allowed to
interfere with the ongoing war in Ukraine. The ongoing war in Ukraine will continue on for the
next following years because of certain conditions that will lengthen the duration of the
conflict. Military support and provisions are currently provided for by the following NATO
countries; France, Germany, Poland and the United States. While Ukraine joining NATO could
trigger its article 5 on collective defense; which means that if Russia attacks a member of NATO,
the entire alliance would be compelled into a hypothetical war. Secondly, in terms of
practicability; Ukraine joining NATO would undoubtedly spark a war in the European continent.
With Russia owning a vast array of nuclear warheads, joining NATO can only spark a nuclear
conflict. Putin has already stated that it would by all means utilize every avenue available in
defense of its territories (A saber rattle, if you will on the option of nuclear arms). This would be
a nightmare scenario for global leaders and citizens that are trying to prevent an already
escalating conflict between the EU countries and Russia. The loss of lives and suffering would be
felt globally, triggering a crisis not only felt by Europe but by the whole world. Thirdly, it is
simply not necessary for Ukraine to have membership in NATO; NATO is already in full
compliance with supporting Ukraine. NATO has been providing tens of billions of euros in
military and financial aid form to Ukraine, hence it is justifiable to state that Ukraine already has
a NATO security guarantee without having any membership. Military support does not
necessarily mean a more direct pathway, provisions and arms are given to Ukraine for them to
defend themselves without the risk of igniting a global conflict. Fourthly Ukraine simply does
not reach the minimum requirements under Article 10 of NATO’s constitution for joining.
Ukraine has issues with corruption and political stability. Just in 2014, there occurred a huge
clash between citizens and Ukraine’s government. Albeit, a lengthy violent clash occurred
where a number of people were killed because of electoral issues due to foreign interference.
Ukraine joining NATO would only cause integral issues within the Organization’s security and
structure. Inferring on its previous application to join the European Union, Ukraine also did not
meet the Organization’s standards on economic, political and socioeconomic stability. Lastly,
Ukraine joining NATO would simply confirm Putin’s suspicion on NATO’s objective on
dominating the entire eastern bloc of the European continent. This would translate into a
propaganda war and the Russian citizenry might only be more resolved with the Government’s
current war against Ukraine. Just a month ago, Ukraine’s President Zelenskky signed for a
formal application for Ukraine’s membership to join the NATO alliance. According to several
news outlets, its membership is currently on fast-track. The question remains however, will the
30-member bloc of NATO accept the exceptions in opposed to its very own constitution? Or will
it try to ease tensions through diplomatic channels rather than the usage of its military.
To finish my case, alliances unlike treatises are not mere political expressions but are enshrined
especially in military in alliances. NATO, instead of being a deterrent in a likelihood of global
war might only exacerbate the current conflict between Ukraine and Russia. We should learn
from the previous global wars that aggressive response can only lead to a chain of more
aggressive acts. Let us be more vigilant and actionable on the current motion at hand because
millions of lives are at stake.
