What is Art?

When we hear that word, some of us will jump into an idea of museums or framed paintings and in that
context. Some people of art are only for intellectuals or artsy people but really, art is for everyone who wants
to experience it and it’s often in more places than one realizes. Songs, movies, music or even your
grandmother’s quilt. So, what is art? It’s tough. Art’s been around for thousands of years through the ages. It
has evolved in a number of different ways. The reason for creating it vary from person to person depending
on a number of factors so defining art is tricky and had been debated throughout history. There is no agreed
one definition of art; however, many believe that art is anything that stirs emotion in you. The emotion that is

Module 1: Overview of Arts and Humanities
stirred up depends on your own history or your story.
Everything that makes up who you are. Sometimes a
piece of art may stir different reaction from many
different people. This means one may like an art work,
another may dislike that same art work, another still may
just not have feelings of anything for it at all – none of
them are wrong because everyone is entitled to their
own feelings or emotions when it comes to art. Also, one
may like another form of art that you don’t appreciate.
Best to understand and explore their feelings to
understand the art that one likes. Art is just a label but
one cannot say what it is or isn’t because its one
person’s personal experience or the meaning drawn
from it. As one reacts, he and she has a potential to grow
and learn from it and gives opportunities to tell stories
and record history.
