For example in the wave below, points O, D and F are in phase. Hence OD = 1 wavelength.

The points B and E are in phase, because just to the right and left of B and just to the right and
left of E the displacemts of the particle are equal. Hence BE = 1 wavelength.
The points D and F are in phase. Hence DF = 1 wavelength.
The points A and C are anti-phase withrespect to each other.

Questions on Phase
1. State which points are in phase and state between which 2 points is one wavelength. Put your
answers on the right-hand side of the diagrams.
2. How many wavelengths or cycles are there wave below between A and B?

3. Using your ruler, determine the amplitude of the wave in question 2 above.

4. Given that the distance from A to B in question 2 is 12cm, find its wavelength.

5. Given that the speed of the wave in question 2 is 340ms-1, find its frequency.

6. The diagram below shows a wave being produced by a vibrating object.

(i) Find the period and frequency.

(ii) Find the amplitude.

(iii) Given that the speed of the wave is 360ms-1, calculate its wavelength.
