ABSTRACT
The accidents on sea have been analysed by the European Maritime Safety Agency that there
were two-third of accidents happen due to the human errors which are responsible for most
shipping insurance losses. Autonomous systems can help reduce the dependence of humans
that can make mistakes due to fatigue or bad judgment, autonomous ships could make our
oceans safer. Even if a crew is on board having ship’s sensors combined with artificial
intelligence will held the crew make better- informed decisions. The vision of autonomous
sea navigation has been in the focus for years. In 2016, Rolls Royce launched its Advanced
Autonomous waterborne Applications initiative. “As disruptive as the Smartphone, the smart
ship will revolutionise the landscape of the ship design and operation”, It’s aim is to develop
technologies for ships to be able to monitor their own passage and establish communications
and communicate what’s around and make decisions based on this data. It includes lots of
tasks including sensor technologies, control algorithms and connectivity. Simultaneously, in
November 2018, Watseka Corporation completed the test procedures of its autonomous
shipping system. In the presence of the Norwegian Maritime Authority, the system was tested
on the Norwegian ferry Folgefonn with the full dock-to-dock autonomous operation for the
entire route, visiting three ports. This evolution has the potential to impact all aspects of
operations and business in the industry. In this whitepaper, we explore the introduction of
autonomous ships, outline their business impact on different activities and discuss the new
opportunities that arise for all parties in the maritime ecosystem.
The car ferry Falco, used an intelligence technologies to successfully navigate autonomously
during its voyage between the Parainen and Nauvo. The return journey was conducted under
remote control. During the demonstration they conducted voyage under full autonomous
control. It is also demonstrated with automatic berthing with a autonomous navigation
system. Autonomous ports also require less space than traditional ports. This space can be
utilized for another purpose as tasks like the ship to shore movement of containers can be
completed in less time this will lead to that ship will moor at the port for shorter timeframes.
ENSURING SAFE MNEUVRING a potentially helpful innovation could be automated
magnetic birthing, which allows ships t dock without using ropes. Companies such as
Trelleborg Marine Systems and Mampaey have already created system for this. Technologies
changes are increasing in shipping industry, we have to adapt to technologies changes,
digitization automation and to the most important to paperless world
