SDT Psychological Needs

My Classroom Practices

Autonomy is the ability of a child to make choices and act his/her self-determination. When a
child has autonomy, it helps to build his/her confidence, self-esteem and independence. For
instance, on my Grade 2 pupils, after they finished answering an activity on a short period of

time, they managed to do some chores on their own. They begin to practice writing and
enhanced their drawings for them to consume the extra time. I also let them take the
initiative to do some chores inside our classroom.

A sense of competence is considered by many psychologists as a core psychological need.

Something we are all seeking out in some aspect of our lives. In a classroom, learners were
all chasing competence. They wanted to learn new things especially things that caught their
interests. We as teachers need to support our learners whenever they eagerly wanted to be

competent in a particular aspect. For example, in an English class, if a learner is seeking for
a sense of competence in fluently reciting a poem, he/she will do his/her best in learning
this. He/she can practice, ask for advice and others. As teachers, we should encourage and
lift them up as much as we can to develop their skills.

Sense of Relatedness
When a student feels the sense of belongingness, closeness and support from others, they
will feel motivated on their learning process. Like for instance, a learner didn't want to go to
school due a particular problem in his/her studies. It will affect his/her learning behavior and
performance inside the classroom. But, if the teacher as well as the learners will make that
learner feel belong and accepted, feel support towards his/her classmates, he/she will be
motivated to fulfill their academic performance.
