Examination SS 2021 Traffic Flow Simulation - Basics

Practical application: Working time: 45 minutes

Name: Matr.-Nr.:

1. A VISSIM file has been provided to you on Moodle which contains some parts of the
intersection depicted in Figure 1 i.e. the intersection of Theresienstr. with Luisenstr. You
must complete the network considering the following information. In case you are using
Vissim verson 2020 or older you may get some warnings that you can ignore. (11p)

a) Unzip the provided folder and open the VISSIM file (Exam_TFSb2021.inpx). Note
that the right lane of Theresienstr. before the intersection is a mixed-lane for both
motor vehicles and bicycles. Ignore bicycle traffic in Luisenstr.
b) Add the background image of the intersection that is included in the zip file so that it
fits the provided network. Add the missing roads and connectors.
*If you use the Bing maps in VISSIM, you see a slightly different layout!
c) For the pedestrian crossings, to save time, add only the east-west as indicates in
the figure by arrows. It is not necessary to create the entire sidewalk, an area that
serves the crossings is enough.
d) Make sure to define conflict areas whenever it is necessary to avoid conflicts that
are not solved by traffic signals.

e) Make sure motor vehicles follow the urban driving behavior type while bicyclists
follow the cycle track driving behavior.

2. Add traffic input to your simulation and define the corresponding static routes according
to turning ratios given in Figure 2. Motor vehicles is composed of 95% passenger cars
and 5% heavy good vehicles. (10p)

a) For passenger cars and HGVs use the speed distribution of 50 km/h and 40 km/h,
respectively.
b) Add reduced speed areas on all turns with a speed distribution of 20 km/h
c) Use the following desired speed distribution for all bicyclists
Cumulative probability

Speed (km/h)

3. Define the necessary pedestrian areas on both sides of the intersection to facilitate the
pedestrian crossings as indicated. Add 500 pedestrians per hour that cross from
each side. (4p)

4. Create a two-stage traffic signal program according to the following plan. Don’t forget
to add the signal heads for pedestrians in both directions! (5p)

5. Add a bus line and the corresponding bus stop on Gabelsbergerstraße with the
following characteristics. For dwell time use a normal distribution with standard
deviation of 2 seconds. (5p)

Desired speed

East – South Every 10 minutes 40 km/h 55 passengers 12 seconds

6. Add a lay-by bus stop at the location in the provided image. Make sure the stop is
activated and the bus stops for the dedicated dwell time. (3p)

7. Perform two simulation runs of 10 minutes (simulated time) each with an additional
warm up time of 5 minutes and save the requested information a separate excel (or
csv) file: (7p)
the average number vehicles and bicycles that cross the data collection point on
Theresienstr aggregated in 60 seconds interval. Export the data for each vehicle class
i.e. passenger car, HGV and bicycles separately. Your file should basically look like
below:

Time interval - lane Cars HGV Bikes

300-360 (lane 1)
300-360 (lane 2)
300-360 (bike lane)
360-420 (lane 1)
360-420 (lane 2)
360-420 (bike lane)

Please note:
Save all simulation files and the results excel workbook or csv file in one folder and zip
that folder. You can only upload one archive file on Moodle (*.zip, *.7z, *.rar, *.tar etc.).
make sure your submission is successfully uploaded.

In case you can’t upload your files on Moodle, you can alternatively Email it to:
