The Possibility of Implementation of Common Core State Standards (CCSS)

in Second Language Acquisition

I am thinking about creating a paper about the possibility of CCSS implementation for
Indonesian students. English is one of the foreign languages required for all Indonesian students
in high school. Most of the lessons are related to literacy such as introducing types of texts,
analyzing a text, finding errors in a text, and many more. In my home school, most of the
students lack ability in literacy, especially in reading skills, and unfortunately, these literacy
things always appeared in the teaching-learning process and final exam. Imagine how hard for
them to finish the reading and do the examination with a lack of literacy. This concern has
existed since years ago and we as teachers are still trying to find a solution to this second
language literacy issue.
After reading Combating the Crisis in Adolescent Literacy: Exploring Literacy in the
Secondary Classroom written by Jillian L. Wendt in 2013, I was awakened that there are things
to explore, and I found CCSS (Common Core State Standards) which means cross-disciplinary
literacy for all students at the end of high school. The CCSS addresses literacy standards in all
disciplines, including social studies/history as well as science and other technical subjects. The
Core Standards encourage inquiry, critical analysis, and dissemination of material in ways that
are meaningful, realistic, and evidence-driven for all students, including English Language
learners. With the implementation, students hopefully will be required to demonstrate and build
content knowledge, engage in critical thinking about new material, value evidence, understand
and appreciate new perspectives and differing cultures, and use technology effectively and
efficiently. I am really interested to explore more about how to implement CCSS for my home
school students. This project will focus on students in learning a second language literacy, with
some specific topics that will be discussed about what are some of the key features of the
Common Core that seem to have the most potential for learners in my context? what are some of
the ways teachers have successfully implemented these goals in other contexts, and how could
these be adapted to the specific needs of my school?

1. I do observation in Indiana high school and brashear high school, teacher
implemented ccss (common core state standars)
2. Students directed to do thing in each lesson
3. I plan to implement the same thing in my home school, not the whole standard and
the lesson, cz we have our own standard, it’s more like the activities of ccss which is
focus on math, history, English. But in my case, English is foreign language and not
the main language.
4. I will try to figure it out if will it work to implement the same activities like US
teacher did to my students?

Suggestions
1. Difference in west and east
2. Is it cultural context
3. More divide (another way)
