Eagles Lesson 5: Regular & Irregular Shapes (1 hour) Subject: Grade 2 Math

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES

General Learning Outcome: Students will …

2.2: analyze and explain geometric attributes of shape.

Specific Learning Outcomes:

- K 2.2.1: Common geometric attributes include sides, vertices, and faces or surfaces
- K 2.2.2: Two-dimensional shapes may have sides that are line segments
- U 2.2.4: Shapes are defined according to geometric attributes
- U 2.2.5: A shape can be visualized as a composition of other shapes
- S 2.2.6: Sort shapes according to two geometric attributes and describe the sorting rule
- S 2.2.8: Create a picture or design with shapes from verbal instructions, visualization, or memory

LEARNING OBJECTIVESBJECTIVES

Inquiry Questions:

- How can shape influence perception of space?

- How can I compare, sort, and classify 2D shapes?

Students will …

- identify 2D shapes
- name 2D shapes
- describe 2D shapes

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

- student/PDF shape anchor charts

- Pencils/erasers
- Teal journals
PREPARATION, CONSIDERATIONS, DIFFERENTIATION

Preparation:
- Have definition and examples of regular and irregular shapes (PDF format ready for use on the Smartboard)
- Print out Daily Word Problems and Shape Sorting worksheets
- Cut apart Daily Word Problem so they are ready for students to put in journals
Differentiation:
- Redirecting (verbal, proximity, eye contact) for VL, AH, MB, TA, DB, AS
- Mrs. Stafford (EA) beside TA/AS/DB- they sit beside each other and she can help repeating instructions and
facilitating the activity
- Movement break for everyone after approximately 15 minutes
- Repeating and modifying language for KM (ELL)

PROCEDURE

Introduction Time

- Review from yesterday: what is a polygon 10-15 minutes

- Have students find a partner and tell them all about polygons
- Anchor chart: talk about all the -agon shapes (Pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon,
nonagon, decagon)

Body Time

- Show examples of each shape in real world examples 10 minutes

- Guided Reading

- Regular/Irregular Shapes: Regular shapes have sides that are all equal length and have 10 minutes
equal interior angles
- Have students draw random shapes and sort them into regular and irregular categories
15 minutes
If time: shape scavenger hunt around the class for both types of shapes

Conclusion Time
- Have students draw both a regular and irregular shape as an exit slip (use recycled paper 5 minutes
from polygon activity)

Assessment

- Who can define a regular and irregular shape?

- Who can differentiate between regular and irregular shapes?
- Who can define a quadrilateral shape?
- Who can give examples of quadrilateral shapes?

Reflection

Worked well:
- Not as much pencil/paper work, so students stayed engaged with me
- Exit slip of having them draw a regular and irregular shape was a good indicator of if they
understood the concept or needed some review
Improvements:
- Look up real life examples of each shape beforehand to save time during lesson
