Activity 1: Practical Application: Workshop!

1. Consider the type of sampling methods and decide what sampling method will give a fair
chance of selection if you select samples from only 1 class of students about 48 persons.

Explain why: Probability is always better than non-probability sampling because it

gives a fair chance of selection to all qualified populations and lower the risk of bias.
Random selection is a key component of probability sampling, which enables you to
draw robust statistical conclusions about the entire group. Non-probability sampling
entails non-random selection based on practicality or other factors, making it simple to
gather data.

2. Classify the following whether it is nominal, ordinal, interval, index or ratio.

Age, sex, race, rank, Topnotchers, Honor Students, Latin Honors, weight,
temperature, Celsius, 1 tablet has 500mg of Vitamin C. Dolfenal 250 tab has 250mg
of Mefenamic Acid.

Variables Scale of measurement Variables Scale of measurement

Age Interval Latin honors Ordinal

Sex nominal Weight Interval

Race Nominal Temperature Interval

Rank Ordinal Celcius Interval

Topnotcher ordinal 1 tab 500 mg of vit c ratio

Honor students Ordinal Dolfenal 250 mg has 250 Ratio

mg of Mefenamic Acid
Compute for the following:

3. Compute for the following:

Difficulty Index
Given: (Based form the given table above)
55 (total number of students with the correct answers)
100 (total number of students in the class who took the exam) Find Difficulty Index:

Formula:
Difficulty Index= total number of students with the correct answers divided by total number of students
in the class who took the exam
Difficulty Index= 55/100 = 0.55
Explanation: this means based on the table of Result by Hopkins and Antes, 0.55 has a moderate
difficulty level. This is a very good test item.

4. Discrimination Index

Given:

18 (Total number of students with correct answers from the upper

group). 7 (total number of students with correct answers from the
lower group Find Discrimination index
Formula:
Discrimination Index= Upper 25% with correct answer- lower 25% with correct answer
Discrimination Index= 18 (25%)- 7 (25%)
=18 (0.25) - 7 (0.25%)

= 0.72- 0.28

= 0.44

This means that it has a very good test item. You can retain.

5. Determine and justify if this is:

Positive Discrimination: It has positive discrimination since there are 18 students in the upper
25% who got correct answers compared to the 7 students only who got correct answers from the lower
25% group.
Negative Discrimination: There is no negative discrimination since the lower 25% group is lesser
than the upper 25% group who got the correct answers.

Is there a maximum discrimination? Yes, it has maximum discrimination. Because when you sum up the
25% of both upper and lower groups who got the correct answers, it is only equal to 25 which is less
than 25%.

What is the measure of attractiveness? The test has a strong measure of attractiveness since it
attracts 23 students from the lower group in selecting the wrong answers than the 7 students from the
upper group.
