Power Generation Due to their high reliability, THM gas turbines are widely employed in power generation and cogeneration applications with millions of accumulated operating hours. In pure power generation applications without heat recovery, a distinction can be made between the following service applications: For both island mode and peaking operation, high starting reliability is an essential prerequisite to ensure reliability of supply.

Continuous operation with the generator feeding into a grid network, for which the robust trouble free nature of the THM series is ideal. Island mode operation of a single machine set, or of a power plant consisting of several power trains. supplying a local grid, without any tie-in to a wide-area network. Power supply systems used on offshore oil production platforms are typical examples that require a high supply reliability. Intermittent operation for: 1. balancing the peak load requirements of a grid, 2. emergency cover of a supply sector in the event that main generation equipment fails, 3. compensation of irregular fluctuations in load demand, i.e. to satisfy power requirements for a limited number of hours, e.g. during loading operations.
Outdoor Installation The skid option with a weatherproof acoustic enclosure enables the THM turbine-generator sets to be installed outdoors without the need for investment in a building.
Heat Recovery / Cogeneration The temperature of the exhaust gases leaving the THM gas turbine are at approx. 500C, assuming ISO operation in open cycle. With the THM 1304-11, approx. 22 MW (thermal) can be recovered through heat exchange down to a final stack temperature of 100C. This energy can then be utilized in various processes.
Examples:
Direct drying processes (e.g. sewage sludge) using the hot exhaust gases can be employed, provided that the materials in question suffer no damage. Alternatively, indirect drying can be used with an intermediate drying medium (e.g. air). Cogeneration processes where, in addition to electric power production, steam or hot water is produced in a waste heat boiler. The heat can be utilized in various processes, e.g. paper production, district heating etc.
Steam generated in a waste heat boiler can be used to drive a condensing steam turbine, thereby producing 4 5 MW of additional electric energy. This configuration of gas turbine, waste heat boiler, steam turbine and auxiliary plant units (condensation system etc.) forms a combined cycle (CCGT) power plant. Based on the THM 1304-11 and a single-pressure boiler without supplementary firing capacity, Figure 5 shows, as an example, the steam rate which can be produced as a function of steam pressure, with steam temperature as the other selection parameter. Similar diagrams are available for other system configurations.
Feedwater
In addition to cogeneration, socalled "trigeneration" cycles are also possible whereby, in addition to electric power, heat and refrigeration energy can be supplied from the same system. Using this configuration, the steam generated in the waste heat boiler can either be used for heating purposes or for supplying an absorption refrigeration plant. For example, a trigeneration facility can be used to operate the heating system of a building complex in winter, and its air-conditioning system in summer.
