FINAL EXAM 1
(Reading 10 pts)

ANGER: THE MOST MISUNDERSTOOD EMOTION?

People are angry these days. A recent survey carried out by Esquire in America reported that ap-
proximately half the Americans being questioned reported feeling even angrier than they did one year ago.
It’s a fact that can’t be avoided. Turn on the television news, or check out the news online and you will see
daily reports of unfathomable acts of rage. Teenagers slaughtering their parents, elderly people killing the
neighbor’s dog and employees exploding with feelings of injustice and anger. It’s a fact that the police are
regularly called to deal with disturbances of the peace resulting from people being served large instead of
small fries, or pickles instead of mayo!
Anger is commonly misunderstood, mismanaged, suppressed and denied, but is this much-maligned
human emotion all bad? Yes, anger often does lead to conflict, aggression and violence, but does it not also
play an important role in life? Consider for example justifiable anger at the abuse of the vulnerable, or at the
deplorable working conditions in sweat factories abroad or at the lack of access to clean drinking water in a
number of African countries. The role that this emotion often plays in this type of scenario is that it becomes
the trigger needed to bring about change. Throughout the history of man, justifiable anger has effected so-
cial change and empowered and given a voice to those unrepresented in society. So anger often does act as a
catalyst for change and development.
With regard to health on the other hand, stress and anger have been shown to be detrimental to
health. However, getting moderately angry can actually relieve stress. So, the often-told advice that venting
anger is healthy is actually founded in truth.
It is, however, important to distinguish between justifiable anger and dissatisfaction. Whereas an-
ger provoked by injustice can be a positive force in society, anger resulting from feelings of dissatisfaction
is more likely to be injurious and polarizing in effect. In today’s highly materialistic society, people have
come to worship the fallacy of entitlement. How this works is that we feel entitled to all that life has to offer,
despite never having earned it. Our seemingly unlimited expectations then lead to disproportionate levels of
anger when we don’t have the same social status, belongings and wealth as our neighbors. Too many people
feel affronted by, and respond in violence to what most other people would view as being utterly trivial
incidents. As a result, aggressive acts proliferate and invade our society.
It is not anger per se that is the problem, but rather the mismanagement of that anger. Anger and
conflict will always be present in our society, so it is vital that we acquire effective strategies to deal with
them. With more pressures than ever before, it is vital that we address this issue at ground level. Rather than
just teaching academics at school, it is imperative that our schools provide effective training in the life skills
of assertiveness, stress management and anger management. We must teach our children not to suppress or
mismanage their anger, but to develop the skills of negotiation, assertion and conflict resolution. If not ad-
dressed immediately, our children’s children will grow up thinking that it is normal and acceptable behavior
to beat the delivery man for being late.
