THEORY

Rectifiers are electronic devices that convert alternating current (AC) to direct current
(DC). There are several types of rectifiers used in power electronics and Electric Drive
as an Application, including single-phase and three-phase rectifiers that can be fully
controlled or semi-controlled. Here is a short explanation of each type:

1. Single-phase fully controlled rectifier: This type of rectifier uses thyristors to


control the DC output voltage. It can be used in applications where a high
level of control is required, such as in motor drives and industrial applications.

2. Single-phase semi-controlled rectifier: This rectifier uses a combination of


diodes and thyristors to control the DC output voltage. It is commonly used in
applications where a lower level of control is required, such as in lighting
control and small motor drives.
3. Three-phase fully controlled rectifier: This rectifier uses six thyristors to control
the DC output voltage. It is commonly used in high-power applications such
as in large motor drives and industrial applications.
4. Three-phase semi-controlled rectifier: This rectifier uses a combination of
diodes and thyristors to control the DC output voltage. It is commonly used in
applications where a lower level of control is required, such as in welding
machines and variable speed drives.

The diodes and thyristors are semiconductor devices that conduct current in
only one direction and are used in converter circuits. The AC source is
connected to the diode-thyristor bridge, which rectifies the AC voltage into a
pulsating DC voltage. The thyristor is then used to control the output voltage
by turning it on and off at specific times during the AC waveform. The timing
of the thyristor firing can be adjusted using a control circuit.
When the thyristor is turned on, it conducts current and allows the DC voltage
to flow through the load. When the thyristor is turned off, the current stops
flowing, and the voltage across the load drops to zero. By varying the timing
of the thyristor firing, the output voltage can be adjusted and controlled. This
allows for a variable output voltage that can be used to control the speed of
DC motors, regulate the voltage of batteries, and other industrial applications.
In summary, single-phase and three-phase rectifiers can be fully controlled or
semi-controlled, depending on the level of control required in a particular
application.
