The function of the makeup valve of the line relief valve helps prevent cavitation of the cylinder .

Cavitation of the cylinder can occur, when the oil pressure of the pump that flows to the cylinder
through port (1) is lower than return oil pressure flowing from the cylinder. If pump oil pressure is
lower than return oil pressure, the pump oil that flows through passage (2) is a lower pressure than the
pressure of the return oil.

The return oil causes valve (3) to move upward because return oil pressure is higher than pump oil
pressure.

When valve (3) moves upward, the valve opens. The return oil pressure that is higher can flow past
valve (3) into work port (1). This return oil mixes with pump oil in order to help prevent cavitation of
the cylinder.

The line relief valve is a pilot type valve. The oil for work port (1) flows through passage (2). The oil
then flows into the chamber for spring (4). The combined force of this oil pressure and spring (4)
holds valve (3) closed. The pressure of the oil also acts against pilot valve (10) which is held closed
by spring (6).

The function of the line relief valve protects the cylinders and lines from high pressures.

Pilot valve (10) will move upward, when the oil pressure that is in the chamber for spring (4)
overcomes the force of spring (6). The oil in the chamber for spring (4) now flows past open pilot
valve (10) .

This oil flows through passage (5) into tank passage (9). The oil flows out of passage (9) back to the
hydraulic tank. The oil flows out of the passage faster than the oil which flows through passage (2) .

The force of the oil pressure in the chamber and the force of spring (4) is less than the force of oil
pressure acting against valve (3). The cylinder oil pressure now causes valve (3) to move upward.

When valve (3) moves upward, the valve opens. The valve then allows cylinder oil to flow into tank
passage (9). This oil now flows back to the hydraulic tank. During short pressure spikes, only pilot
valve (10) is open to tank passage (9) .

If the setting for the line relief valve is not to the correct specification, turn adjustment screw (8). Turn
the adjustment screw in the direction that is needed to either decrease or increase the pressure setting.
Locknut (7) is used to prevent adjustment screw (8) from turning after the adjustment is made.
