Summary of Technology

A Finnish company has devised the underpants of the future by creating spandex that measure
real time muscle activity and produces information reports on muscle group performance.
Originally designed to target the athlete community, this product is perceived as a possible
solution to the sedentary lifestyles of contemporary individuals. Furthermore, these spandex
attend to its tracking function through embedded electromyographic sensors that ultimately track
the movement of specific muscle groups (quadriceps, hamstrings, and gluteus maximus). After
which, derived data is sent to a computer for data processing and analysis that ultimately produce
reports that confirm if the individual is on track with his/her physique goal, assess whether
individual must exert more effort and work those muscle groups a little more, report on whether
performed movements facilitated the correct activation sequence of the muscle groups, or serve
as a caution mechanism if in any case the performed movements could lead to injury.

Reaction

As a fitness enthusiast and part-time employee of one of the renowned fitness studios in the
Philippines (Elev8 Fitness Studios – Podium branch), this product among all others I have
bumped into caught my attention the most. Because it goes as far as tracking how hard you are
working your specific muscle groups and communicating such data to a computer for analysis
through cloud technology. For someone who is highly reliant on the Apple watch’s fitness
tracking feature, a high-tech spandex serves as a very enticing product.
