III. LEARNING TASKS

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY

A. Drill

Please stand up and let’s have a prayer. Students stand up.

Good morning, class! Good morning, Sir!

Please be seated. Thank you Sir!

How’s your morning? Fine Sir.

B. Review

Before we proceed to our new lesson this

morning, let’s first have a review with your
previous lesson. Okay Sir.
As a sort of review, I have something for
you to put a label on to the board.

3x²y
I need three volunteers to approach the
board. Put the following labels (LITERAL
COEFFICIENT, TERM, NUMERICAL
COEFFICIENT) to the corresponding
shape on the given. Students approach the board and put labels
on the given.

Very good! Do you have any more

questions with your previous lesson? None Sir!

C. Motivation

There is one family from Sagay city. One

day Classie (daughter) was asked by her
daddy Fy to call his mommy Alice who was
in their neighbor at that time.
So Classie shouted, “Puli na mi al”. ‘mi’
short for mommy and ‘al’ short for alice.

What do you think is the word that sounds

like what classie shouted? Polynomial, Sir!

Very good! If we put together the name of

Classie and her daddy Fy, we can come
up with the word ‘Classify’. Therefore, our
topic for today is “Classifying Polynomials”.

D. Lesson Proper

This morning, we will discuss about the

Classification of Polynomials. But before
that, let’s first familiarize our lesson
objectives.

Who can read? Student read:

a. Identify polynomials.
b. Classify polynomials according to
the number of terms.
c. Classify polynomials according to
degree of term/terms.
d. Arrange the terms of a polynomial
according to degree in descending
Let’s define what a polynomial is. power.

 A polynomial is a kind of expression

where each term is a constant, a
variable, or a product of constants and
variables raised to whole number
exponents.

Thus, an algebraic expression is not a

polynomial:
 when the variable is in the
denominator, e.g., 2/y;
 when the exponent of the variable is
not a whole number, e.g.,3x-1;
 when the variable is under a radical
sign, e.g., √x. Students listen attentively.

Teacher gives more examples.

Okay class who can come in front and

encircle the algebraic expressions that are
polynomials? Student answers on the board.

Very good! Now that we already know how

to identify expressions which are
polynomials, we will now classify them
according to the number of terms.

 Monomial – a polynomial of one term.

Ex: -7x2
 Binomial – a polynomial of two unlike
terms. Ex: 5x4y-2x2y3
 Trinomial – a polynomial of three unlike
terms. Ex: 10x2-7x+3
 Multinomial – a polynomial of four or
more unlike terms. Ex: 2x5-x3+3x-5

Teacher gives more examples. Students listen attentively.

Do you now understand how to classify

polynomials according to number of terms? Students participate actively.

Very good! Now we will proceed to the

degree of polynomials. Yes, Sir.

 Degree of a term – is the sum of

powers of each variable in the term.
Ex:

a. 3rd degree

b. 0th degree 14 = 14x0

So, what do you think is the degree of the

term in the expression, -2u3vw2? 6th degree, Sir!

Correct! This is because…

Now, we can proceed to the degree of

polynomial.

 Degree of a Polynomial is the same as

that of its highest-degree term
(provided like terms have been
combined).
Ex:

a.

b.

So, what do you think is the degree of the

polynomial, 6a2bc3+12ab6c2?

Correct! It is because the highest-degree

term in the expression is 9. 9th degree, Sir!

Now that we already know how to identify

the degree of a polynomial, we can now
arrange a given expression to its standard
form which is in descending powers of the
variable.

Example:
5x2-x+x3+7 in standard form is x3+5x2-x+7

 When a polynomial has more than one

letter, it can be arranged in descending
powers of any one of its letters. Students listen properly in the discussion.
Ex:
Arrange 3x3y-5xy+2x2y2-10
a. In descending power of x.
b. In descending power of y.

Solution:
a. 3x3y+2x2y2-5xy-10
b. 2x2y2+3x3y-5xy-10

Who can give the standard form of 3x-

x3+2x5-5? 2x5-x3+3x-5, Sir!

Very good!

1. Pre-Activity

Class, I will divide you into 3 groups. Each

group will select a leader, secretary, and
reporter.
Leaders kindly get your material here in
the table. (Leaders get the material)

2. Activity Proper

I will give you (7) minutes to do your

activity.
You may start now. (Students do their activity)

3. Post-Activity

Time is up!
Okay class, kindly settle yourselves now.

Let’s check your work. We will start with

the group 1 reporter, to be followed by the
group 2 and group 3. (Students report their work)

E. Analysis

Based on the activity that you have done,

how do we know if the given expression is
not a polynomial? When the variable is in the denominator, when
the exponent of the variable is not a whole
number, and when the variable is under a
radical sign.
When can we say that a polynomial is
Trinomial? When a polynomial has three unlike terms.

How about multinomial? When a polynomial has four or more unlike

terms.

How do we get the degree of polynomial in

a given expression? By adding the exponents of the variables of
the highest-degree term.
How do we write a polynomial to its
standard form? By writing the polynomial in descending
powers.

F. Abstraction/Generalization

To sum up with, what are the

classifications of polynomials? Polynomials can be classified according to
degree and number of terms.
What are the classifications of polynomials
according to number of terms? Monomial, Binomial, Trinomial and
Multinomial.
What are the classifications of polynomials
according to degree? 1st degree, 2nd degree, 3rd degree, and so on.

How do we write polynomials in

descending powers? By writing from the highest-degree term to the
lowest-degree term.

G. Application

Why do you think our Christian Faith

promote monogamy and prohibit
polygamy? Because our Christian faith allows us to marry
only one person.
Very good. When we say monogamy, a
person can only marry one person while in
polygamy; a person can marry more than
one person.

Okay, is there any question or clarification

regarding our discussion for today? None, Sir.
