INTRODUCTION

In 1984, the Associated Cement Company, India's leading cement and

concrete supplier, commissioned Charles Correa for two projects, in two
separate lots, to be incorporated into an existing neighborhood (ACC
colony), for its workers close to the industry itself.
The new units designed by the Indian architect are positioned along the
perimeter of the sites, leaving large courtyards and open common
spaces inside.
In both cases there is a progression from the outside to the inside of the
site: from public access to the private internal space of the house itself,
to a semi-private patio or garden, to the large common central space,
making the built area ratio / green areas is almost one to one.

LOCATION: Wadi, Gulbarga district, north of the state of Karnataka

(India)

CLIMATIC ZONE: dry and healthy climate, characterized by the monsoon

season in the summer months and temperatures with an annual
average from 26 ° to 30 °; the average rainfall is 750 mm per year
SITE LAYOUT
The units designed are strung along the periphery of the sites,
rather like a necklace. There is a progression from the exterior
to the interior of the site; from the public and vehicular access
domain, to the private internal space of the house itself to a
semi-private patio or court, to the large central communal
space
SUBJECT:
Two interventions positioned along the perimeter of two
different lots; the first type has 368 apartments, the second 48
courtyard houses
ACCOMMODATION COMPOSITION : there are 2 types of
apartments in complex "B", and a type of terraced houses in
complex "J"
DENSITY : Intervention area 46.053 ~ 4.61 ha, 10.182 ~ 1.02 ha
Built area 17.664 m² ~ 1.77 ha, 2.860 m² ~ 0.29 ha
Green areas 12.268 m² ~ 1.26 ha, 2.475 m² ~ 0.25 ha

ORIENTATION : the main access to the two areas is located respectively in the
North-West and South-West, but the individual units change orientation taking
on different directions in the general composition SITE PLAN
OVERVIEW

• ACC: (The Associated Cement Company), Wadi, Andhra Pradesh – 1984: Two types of projects are designed
in an existing settlement for the ACC Company [2]. Two types of modules are used in each solution and
they both have two floors.
• In the first type, unit modules are grouped with 90º rotations and mirror operations. The generation is
done by rotation, rotational symmetry and mirror operations.
• The site generation is done by repetition and rotation of the generated groups.
• In the center of the houses stairs and halls are designed and around the hall rooms, living room and kitchen
is placed.
• In the second type, two types of modules are generated. With the combinations of two modules, different
alternatives and perspectives can be obtained. All the rooms are facing outside in this project.
• In the first group, the generation is chainlike while in the second one it is clustered.
TYPE B COMPLEX

consists of 368 flats, each with an area of 48 sq.m.

These 3 structures are arranged in a highly formal manner to
form a series of interconnected units, courtyards and
gardens. The units decrease on the upper levels to form
terraces overlooking the central space.
The apartments consist of
• living room
• service areas
• kitchen bedroom
• garden or terraces on the upper floors

The Projects and Analysis

Correa has designed several houses with a variety of generation method .The forms are mostly
basic and the generations can be grouped as linear generations, grouped or clustered generations,
and chainlike generations. In some settlements, only a single type of module is used while on the
others various modules (units with a variety of fields) can be seen

TYPE J COMPLEX
Units are approximately 65 sq.m. each.
These consists of 45 courtyard houses, ventilated by internal patios, arranged
in tightly-knit clusters.
Each two-storey unit has a barsati (rainy season) room on the terrace.
The terraced houses consist of : living room, service areas and
kitchen, bedroom, courtyards and garden additional bedroom on the first floor
and a "barsati" terrace

Shape Grammars
Generative grammar is a system used to study and explore new languages with characters and symbols. Shape grammar
is one type of generative grammars which deals with points, lines, shapes and solids instead of characters. In shape
grammars, new shapes can be created by an initial shape, shape elements and production rules. So basically it focuses
on the shapes and the production rules with which the shapes come together. Analytical studies of shape grammars on
architectural works help to understand the formal relations of architectural works and can be used to analyze design
grammars of a certain architect, a characteristic tissue or a typology.

Correa’s Grammar
In Charles Correa's public housing projects, it is possible to see the effect of his design
language. Correa, parallel to the rapid population growth in Third World Countries,
designed settlements which are low-rise and quickly built as well as have the potential
of expansion. In addition to this, each house is designed with its open spaces and
house groups which its public spaces. In short, Correa designed low-rise housing with
its open-space relations, wellresolved air conditioning with a rational manner [4]. The
underpinning of culture as well as old architecture is the dominant factor for this
manner. Correa stated that “In this, the old architecture – especially from vernacular –
has much to teach us, as it always develops a typology of fundamental sense.” [5]. In
short the rationalism and efficiency between these projects lies on the teachings of
vernacular architecture.
