Reflection on the STEM Exhibit

JEROLD D. PILAPIL

SERIES CIRCUIT
It is also called as simple circuit. Po
A series circuit is called as one path
circuit through which current flow in one
direction. All of its components share
common current, if one is removed, all of
it will fail to connect.
A sample of series circuit is the
traditional Christmas lights, all of the
components of a Christmas shares only
one flow of electricity, if one of its light
went out all of it will went out also.

PARALLEL CIRCUIT
In a parallel circuit, multiple
branches devides the flow of current so
it passes through each branch. No matter
how many components are connected,
there are never more than two sets of
electrically common points.
A parallel circuit is also called as
multiple path circuit. The current flows
into different branches just to reach its
resistors or the bulb. Even if you remove
one component or bulb in it, electric
current always flow because of its
multiple branches reaching each bulbs.
An example of parallel circuit are the
lights in each part of our houses. Even if
one bulb of it went out, others will still
light up because it is connected to
multiple branches.

BERNOULLI’S BLOWER
Bernoulli’s blower, as air passes
through the fan in the base and through
the tube on top, it goes faster. A stream
of fast moving air will have lower
pressure than the still air surrounding it.
The still air surrounding the air stream creates a “wall” of high pressure that helps to keep
the ball from falling out.
Through Bernoulli’s principle, inside the jet of air where the velocity is at its
highest has a low pressure while the outside the stream has low velocity and high
pressure. This difference in pressure allows the ball to be suspended by the blower.
A sample of this is our leaf blowers. It propels leaves in one direction.

HAND CRANK GENERATOR

Hand crank generator’s principle is
converting mechanical energy to electrical
energy, by the use of a DC motor, we can
convert mechanical power to electrical power.
An example of this is the Magneto of
the motorcycle. When you kick the kick starter
the magneto will turn fast, depends on the
strength you kick the starter and it will generate
energy giving the Sparkplug a current to start
the motorcycle.

PLASMA BALL
Inside the ball is a coil of wires that
have electrons going through them at a
very high frequency. This shakes the
atoms around the wires so hard that
their electrons start to fall off! Inside
the glass globe is a partial vacuum.
This means that some of the air has
been sucked out. Because there is not
as much air in there, it is easier to
make electric sparks that can be seen.
A plasma ball is a toy that mainly uses our curiosities because of its unique
lightning effects. We feel amazed because the lightning is following our hands. It is
simply uses our enjoyment in life.

ELECTRIC BUMP MAZE

You need to pass the obstacle
with the rod not touching the line or
the pattern. If it touches the pattern, it
will cause an alarm. It means that you
have failed the maze.
In this part, we needed great
focus in doing it, serious concentration
and avoid any distractions. Patience
controls the game. And the ability to
resist our stresses in life.

INFINITY WELL
The use of two mirrors facing each
other and LED lights to project illusion
of infinity or endless well. As the light
from the LEDs bounce between the
mirrors, some light will pass through
the partial mirror each time.
The infinity well projects illusion on
our eyes that makes us believe that it is
a well with endless or bottomless well.
Infinity illusions is usually used in clothing and departments stores. It is usually
seen in dressing rooms of department stores.

FROZEN SHADOW
This exhibit uses a special type of paper that
captures light to make it glow in the darkness.
The paper glows in the dark because it
contains a material called phosphors.
Phosphors can radiate light after they have
gotten energy from the sun or another source
of bright light. The phosphors soak up the
energy from the light, and then they radiate
this energy as light.
Phosphorescence is the kind of
luminescence that uses phosphors to make
something glow in the dark. Some examples of
this type of luminescence include items like a
computer screen and white LED lights.
An example of this are the traffic signs. It
reflects light at night when we are driving at
night because it stores and radiate its light
back at us.

PENDULUM
P In our life, we can usually see but
doesn’t notices this in our clocks or
even in the swings in the playgrounds.
NEWTONIAN FLUID
With the mixture of cornstarch
and water, it creates an unusual liquid
that when we touch it slowly, our hands
slowly sink in, but when we use force
just like punching it, the liquid repels the
force just like the force is coming back at
us.
A Newtonian fluid is a fluid in
which the viscous stresses arising from
its flow are at every point linearly
correlated to the local strain rate. Stresses
are proportional to the rate of change of
the fluid's velocity vector.
Honeys are example of
Newtonian liquid. When it is poured in a
glass, it slowly falls. You do not need to
force it to flow.
