DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 3

CHANGES THAT MATERIALS UNDERGO

I. Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to:
A. Explain what are the physical and chemical changes
B. Differentiate between physical and chemical changes
C. Identify changes around us

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Changes that Materials Undergo

B. Science Process: Observing, Identifying, describing.

C. Value Focus: Cooperation

D. Materials: Power point presentation, pictures.

III. Learning Procedures

TEACHERS’ ACTIVITY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY

A. Preliminar Activities

1. Prayers
“Class please stand up for a short prayer. Who
would like to lead?” A student will volunteer to lead the prayer

2. Greetings
Good morning class! I am your teacher for Good morning Teacher Lyka.
today. You can call me teacher Lyka. Good morning classmates.

3. Energizer
Now, let us stand up and dance the (The students will dance)
Science song”

4. Checking Attendance
Is there any absent in the class?
None ma’am
No one? I like that! You are all very active in
my class.
Okay, Very Good.

5. Setting of Classroom Rules

Before we start our lesson for today, let us Sit Properly
first recall our classroom rules. Who can give
me the first rule?

Okay, correct. What else?

Be quiet
Listen Carefully
Very Good! Participate.

IV. Learning Activities

A. ENGAGE

Class are you familiar with “matter?”

Yes, teacher.
Yes, very good. Because you have this in our
previous lesson right?

The solid, liquid and gas, you remember now

class?
Yes, teacher.
Great! I’m glad that you remembered our
previous topic which is the “Matter”

In connection with this topic, we will going

identify the changes that materials undergo.
Materials such as solid, liquid and gas and
what will happen with them if they will
undergo some changes.

Now I want you to watch this video, because

later on I will ask and we will have an
activity. (the students will participate)

Okay class that was just a short video, but did

you learn something about it class?
So what was the video all about?
About physical and chemical changes teacher
Okay very good.

B. EXPLORE
Now let’s do some experiment!

Activity 1: What is the Effect of Heat on

some Materials.

Materials:
Cup
water
Ice

Procedure:
* Fill the cup with water and ice. *

Observe….

Question: What happens to the ice after you

put it in the water for 2 minutes?

Teacher, the ice was melting.

Okay very good class!

Activity 2: Where did the water Go?

Materials:
2 glass of jar
Food coloring
Water
Marker

Procedure:
* Fill to jars of water and make sure you have
equal amount of water and add drops of food
coloring.
Mark each jar so you can observe a measure
changes over time.
Place the lid on one jar and put both on a
sunny windowsill*
Observe…

Questions:
1. If you leave them for long enough, what do
you think will happen?
2. Will the water in both jars stay the same?
Or change? What is your prediction?

C. Explain

Changes that Materials Undergo:

• Physical changes
• Chemical changes

Physical Change

➢ Is a change where no new substance is

formed

➢ Affect the form of a chemical

substance but not its chemical
composition.

Examples:
Melting ice
Slicing bread

Chemical Change

➢ Occur when a substance combines

with another to form a new substance
➢ A change of materials into another,
new materials with different properties
and one or more than one new
substance are formed
➢ Involves the production of a new
substance.

Examples:
Cooking
Burning of woods
Mixing of chemicals
D. Ellaboration

To further understand the lesson, I have here

set of exercises

Direction: Write P if it is Physical change and

C if it is Chemical change. Write your answer
in the space provided.

____1. Melting of Candle

____2. Burning of Charcoal
____3. Condensation of water vapor
____4. Chewing Food
____5. Decaying of Human waste
____6. Wilting of plants
____7. Grinding of meat
____8. Cutting of grasses
____9. Charring of sugar
____10. Freezing water

E. Evaluate
Assignment

Direction: Cut out different pictures in an old

magazine or newspaper, each with five
examples of physical and chemical change.
Identify and write a brief description of each
picture. Paste it on a short bond paper.

That’s all for today, children. I hope you learn

a lot from our discussion today.

Yes, teacher.

Thank you for listening and participating in

today's lesson.
