Mod 4-6 Assignment: Summarization

The author commences by describing the context of her life: that she grew up in Florida, her family is
from Haiti, and introduces the concept of beaches and usual archetypical thought about them; then
delineates the premise that she does not like them in the fourth paragraph. She then lists the
reasons why, citing amongst many examples sticky children, beauty standards and the ramifications
of being subjected to them, uncontrolled pets, and other such nuisances of the beach. She expounds
on these inconveniences for a few paragraphs, creating more detailed lists of elements of beach life
she finds problematic. Finally, she describes the difference between the value of what we imagine
and what we experience, and elucidates on why it is both a boon that provides mental stimulation
and hopefulness, before reflecting on the shared experience this creates and citing that she is now
immune to it herself. (Gay, 2014)
