GLOBAL FOOD SECURITY

KEY FACTOR'S THAT AFFECT FOOD SECURITY :

LAND DEGRADATION:

•Intense farming strips the soil of nutrients leading to the decline in agricultural productivity.

•Infertile soil needs a lot of external inputs like fertilizer and water which increase the cost of
farming.

•Natural resources are being depleted by unsustainable agricultural practices. For example,In latin
America, around 70% of former forest in the Amazon have been converted to grazing.

DECLINING FARMER POPULATION

• In the Philippines ,a 2017 survey of the department of agriculture showed that the average age
of the farmer is 60.

•Filipino farmers said that poor quality of the soil and climate change make farming very
challenging.

•The world relies on small agriculture producer's;some 500 million small holder farms worldwide
produce over 80% of the food consumed in developing world.

•A major cause of worry worldwide is the declining population of the farmer's.

•The young generation is not inclined to farming due to its many challenges and due to its many
challenges and due to the appeal of other occupation which are physically easier and/or with higher
economic and social return.

•In the USA , the net income forecast for 2018 is substantially below the 10 years average of
$86.9billion.

•Meanwhile, production expenses have been rising due to increasing cost of labor, fuel and
feedstock.

GREEDY LAND DEALS

•Developing countries get enticed lopsided deals with cooperations , Which give the latter the
right to agriculture lands at the expense of the former own food security.

•Farmland are being converter into real estate project's such as housing, warehousing, resort
and recreational facilities.

•Due to declining fossil fuel reserve's, biofuels are increasingly being explore as a
renewable.Biofuel, mostly in the form of ethanol is produced through the fermentation of sugar cane
and corn. Thus, it becomes a competition between food and fuel .
•Some argue the corn isn't a very rich source of energy ,thus it is not worthwhile to divert a
sizeable portion of corn produce for biofuel when a lot of people are hungry. The use of corn for biofuel
has also led to the increase of price of corn for food consumption.

•On the other hand, there are also who argue that biofuel are necessary for a sustainable
source of clean energy, thus it risky not to further develop their potential.
