MUFY UNIT SELECTION
GUIDELINES
Subject / Unit Combinations
• To complete MUFY successfully, you need to pass 8 units
• English( Units 1 and 2) is a MUST PASS
• You need 2 more complete subjects for example: Mathematics Unit 1 and 2 and Physics Unit 1 and
2
• You must pass a minimum of TWO Units to continue MUFY
• Your subject combinations depend on which degree you plan to pursue
The following CANNOT BE DONE in Semester 2

• Register for English Unit 2 if you FAILED English Unit 1

• Register for Chemistry Unit 2 if you FAILED Chemistry Unit 1

• Register for Accounting Unit 2 if you FAILED Accounting Unit 1

• Register for Advanced Mathematics Unit 2 if you FAILED Advanced Mathematics Unit 1
Passing Unit 1

• If you failed any Unit 1 of a subject, you cannot enrol into Unit 2 WITHOUT repeating Unit 1.
• You can repeat Unit 1 and sign up for Unit 2 concurrently for the following subjects:-
• Global Studies Contemporary Issues
• Economics
• ICT
• Mathematics
• Biology
• Physics
• Fundamental Mathematics
Passing a Complete Subject

• Students must pass Unit 1 and Unit 2 of a subject i.e., obtain a minimum of 50% in order to
achieve an overall pass for that subject.
• Students who passed Unit 1 but failed Unit 2 or the reverse do not achieve an overall pass for
that subject even though the average of the two marks is over 50%.
Passing a Complete Subject (Example)

• A student who obtains 40% for Mathematics Unit 1 and 70% for Mathematics Unit 2 does pass
Mathematics overall since Unit 1 of the subject has not been passed.
Passing a mixed subject combination

• A student must pass both units of the mixed subject combination in order to achieve an overall
pass.
Passing a mixed subject combination (Example)

• If the mixed subject combination is Chemistry Unit 1 and Physics Unit 1, a student who
obtains 90% for Chemistry Unit 1 and 30% for Physics Unit 1 does not achieve an overall
pass for the mixed subject combination even though the average of the two marks is over
50% because Physics Unit 1 has not been passed.
Repeating a unit

• Students can repeat Unit 1 or Unit 2 of a subject provided that no more than five units are taken
in that semester.
• Students are allowed to repeat a unit ONLY ONCE.
Improving MUFY Score

• Students who have passed Unit 1 or Unit 2 and wish to improve their MUFY Score can
re-enroll in any Unit 1 or Unit 2 provided that no more than five units are taken in that
semester.
• The highest mark combination will be used to determine the MUFY Score.

• Coming back for a third semester is subject to approval .

Advanced Mathematics Units
The Monash University Faculty of Engineering has informed that students who successfully complete
MUFY Advanced Mathematics (score at least 50% in Unit 1 and Unit 2) will be awarded an additional 5
points to count towards their final MUFY score. This ONLY applies to the Bachelor of Engineering
(Honours) course.

It DOES NOT apply to other Monash University undergraduate courses. As such, the awarding of the
extra 5 points WILL NOT be reflected in the MUFY academic transcript.

For example, a student who successfully completes Advanced Mathematics Unit 1 and Unit 2 and
achieves a final MUFY score of 72 will be awarded an extra 5 points bringing the final score to 77 if he
applies to study the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at Monash University.
This new rule is applicable from the July 2021 Monash University intake.
Mathematics Units
• Students who have attempted MUF0091, Mathematics Unit 1 and have obtained a score of 50% or more
are allowed to switch to MUF0142, Fundamental Mathematics Unit 2. This will be considered as a complete
Fundamental Mathematics Unit.

• Students who have failed (below 50%) MUF0091, Mathematics Unit 1 and wish to switch to Fundamental
Mathematics must sign up for MUF0141 and MUF0142 ,Fundamental Mathematics Units 1 and 2.

• Students who have completed MUF0091 and MUF0092, Mathematics Unit 1 and 2 but now wish to switch
to MUF0141 and MUF0142, Fundamental Mathematics Units 1 and 2, will be forfeiting the MUF0091 and
MUF0092 scores.
