PLAN OF INVESTIGATION:

My group topic is Abuse and my sub-topic is Sexual Abuse. My reason for choosing this sub-topic
was very simple, I’ve experienced it and I felt as if I can work with this topic best. I hope that this
research can bring awareness to me and open my eyes to the multiple people that are experiencing
what I have experienced.

To obtain my 3 pieces I will be doing research via google, I will be researching a poem, a short
story and a quote. I plan on going more into these pieces showing the effect behind each of them, I
also plan on showing this effect in my oral presentation after obtaining and analyzing my
research/pieces.
PIECE 1: BEYOUND THE MASK

Beyond the mask

Our greatest fears
Beyond the mask
Flows uncried tears
Beyond the mask
Much pain and hurt
The brokenness of a human heart.

Beyond the mask

Too deep to measure
The thoughts and memories buried there
No amount of pleasure can repair.

Beyond the mask

Bitterness and anger are strongly rooted
Is there a love that can ever uproot this?
Beyond the mask
Dare we journey there?
But the constant hate and turmoil who alone can bear?

Beyond the mask

That lonely place where no-one seems to care or love us.
Yes, it’s such unpleasant ground,
Yet it’s in this very same place that healing is found

Beyond the mask

Go deep,deep, deep beyond.
God will you give the courage and strength to journey on.
Beyond the mask
Reality, truth and those inward parts the years so well conceal.
Take off the mask,
Begin to peel …
How beautiful – when you are revealed!

PIECE 2: IT WAS LITTLE THINGS AT FIRST

It was all little things at
first...
"When I first got with my boyfriend, we got on really well and we were happy
together. But gradually his behaviour started to change.

"It was little things at first like him trying to control what I wore and what I did.
He started to ask me where I was going and who I was speaking to.

"He would get mad at me for talking to boys, even if they were his friends. If I
straightened my hair he'd ask who I was making the effort for.

"He became verbally aggressive with me too and would shout 'You won't find
anyone else. No-one else will have you'. He gradually became more violent
towards me as well.

"It started out with him pushing or shoving me but then one day he threw my
head into a brick wall. After that he would lay into me three or four times a

week.

"I was sexually abused by my step-dad when I was younger and he started to
use that against me. He said 'If you can have sex with your step-dad you can
have sex with me'. He made it out that I had wanted my step-dad to do those
things to me.

"He said I was turning him down.

"One night when we'd been out he thought that I had been looking at another
guy. I hadn't but he didn't believe me. While we were walking home he dragged
me off and raped me.

"I was shocked but he just brushed it off as though it was normal. It made me
feel like rubbish but I stayed with him.

"Over the next few months he raped me a few more times. The attacks would
come out of nowhere and afterwards he would make out he hadn't done
anything wrong because I was his girlfriend.
"I knew that I didn't want him to do it to me but I was trapped with him. We lived
together and he would lock me in so that I couldn't get away from him.
Eventually I managed to escape from him and I ended the relationship.

"People should look out for the signs of sexual abuse and also reassure young
people that they can talk to someone as it's not acceptable.

"If any young people are being forced to have sex then I would urge them to
contact Childline to get the help they need to get out of the situation."
PIECE 3: SPEAK UP AND BE HEARD
REFLECTION 1:
For this reflection the three pieces I will be discussing are: Poem, Quote and a short story

“Beyond The Mask” this illustrates how many trauma a person can experience and still keep a
straight or happy face, this also shows that we shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, this poem helps
me understand how much a person can hide and how much sexual abuse can affect someone’s
mental health.

In my short story it points out how much signs that can start to show in the beginning of a
relationship, it started off with him asking questions and seeming to be controlling. He started
controlling what she wore, who she speaks to and what she did. That made me understand that he
likes being dominant and controlling.

My quote says “speak out and be heard”, that sends a message to anyone suffering from sexual
abuse to speak up about it and let someone help you and hear you out.
REFLECTION 2:
In this reflection I will speak about how my research rapped my mind around sexual abuse, the
things I searched for is a poem, short story and a quote. The poem made me feel sad because there
are so many men and women suffering from sexual abuse and from experience I know it can take a
part of you

The short story talks about the different ways sexual abuse can occur, and also the different signs
you can see in a person.

Ricardo: “Lol, I’m 29 years old”

Jessica: “Oh okay”

Ricardo: “So Jessica, what are you doing here at a park all alone?”

Jessica: “I’m just taking a break from home, it’s a bit toxic”

Ricardo: “I see, any boyfriend? A gorgeous gal like you must have a man to treat you right”

Jessica: “No, I have trust issues”

Ricardo: “Oh, well you deserve to be treated nicely”

Jessica: “I guess so”

Ricardo: “Well jess, can I call you jess?”

Jessica: “Sure”

Ricardo: “Can I have your number Jess? I know it’s a bit weird, but you don’t have to feel sorry for
me either. I don’t want to pressure you at all”
Jessica: “Sure I guess”

Ricardo: “Thank you, I just want someone that I can talk to and I feel like I can trust you”

Jessica: “Oh, well I have to get home before my mom freaks out”

Ricardo: “Okay, see you around”

me to come fix the television for her, so do you want to come along for the ride? It’ll be just for a
while”

Jessica: “Oh no, I’ll wait here for you to come back”

Ricardo: “Do you not trust me? I won’t kidnap you”

Jessica: “I do trust you, I’m just not comfortable with this idea”

Ricardo: “Wait right in living please”

Jessica: “I thought you said that you came to your mother, there isn’t anyone here, there’s no
television”

Ricardo: “Shut up”

Jessica: “Why did I even trust you? Ughh I’m so stupid”

Ricardo: “You are stupid”

Jessica: “Why are you walking so close to me”

Ricardo: “Don’t worry I’ll be quick”

Jessica: “Please don’t touch me”

Ricardo: “Keep still”

Jessica: “Please get off me”

Ricardo: “Now you know why you shouldn’t trust strangers”

Jessica: “Please, I’m only 16”

Ricardo: “I don’t care”

Jessica: “Please don’t rape me”

Ricardo: “I can’t help myself, now be quiet”

Jessica: “I’ll do anything, please just stop”

Ricardo: “Stay still”

Jessica: “Please I’m begging you”

Ricardo: “Keep begging”

Jessica: “Someone help”

Ricardo: “Don’t worry sweetie, nobody can hear you”

Jessica: “Please just let me go, it hurts so much”

Ricardo: “Not now sweetie”

Jessica: “I promise I won’t tell anyone”

Ricardo: “Even if you did nobody would believe you, you’re just the 16 year old girl who sneaked out
of her parents’ house to meet a boy that you don’t actually know the real name of.”

AT JESSICA’S HOUSE AFTER RICARDO LET HER GO KNOWING THAT NOBODY WON’T BELIEVE HER

Jessica: “Hey Kelly, you’re my bestfriend and I can tell you everything right?”

Kelly: “Yeah for sure”

Jessica: “I was raped”

Kelly: “What?!”

Jessica: “I’m sorry, but it’s all my fault”

Kelly: “How is that your fault, no matter what led up to it, nobody deserves to get raped”

Jessica: “I know, but I put my trust into a total stranger, and I knew he was weird at first but I
thought he would change”

Kelly: “Who was it? When did this happen?”

Jessica: “He said his name was Ricardo, but I don’t think that’s his actual name, all I know is that he
raped me yesterday merciless”

Kelly: “OMG Jessica, don’t cry”

Jessica: “I’m sorry but I’m so embarrassed”

Kelly: “You have nothing to be embarrassed about, go tell your parents what happened right now”

Jessica: “I can’t, they’ll never listen to me”

Kelly: “They will, they have to, how does he look?”

Jessica: “He’s tall, about 6’5ft, darkskin and he also has a huge moustache, I didn’t notice anything
else because I didn’t think it’ll lead to this”

Kelly: “It’s okay, I’m here for you”

Jessica: “Thanks but I’m so scared that I’ll look stupid”

Kelly: “You won’t, Speak up!”

Jessica: “Okay I will, can you help me?”

Kelly: “No problem, I’ll help you through everything”

Jessica: “This is really heart breaking for, I feel so gullible and naive to put my trust in a total
stranger”
Kelly: “No, you’re not naïve, you’re just a very kindhearted person who just wanted to be friends
with someone who had the wrong intentions”

Jessica: “I wish people wasn’t this cruel, I don’t think I can trust anyone anymore”

Kelly: “You’ll get through this, It takes years of healing, late night crying, regrets, doubts and
forgiving”

Jessica: “I hope I can really get through this, thanks bestfriend for everything”

Kelly: “Your welcome, now let’s go talk to your parents so they can contact the police”

Jessica: “Okay sure.”

WRITTEN REPORT:

Our group members explored the topics of abuse with the subtopics: Emotional Abuse,
Child Abuse, Domestic Abuse, Physical Abuse, Verbal Abuse, Animal Abuse and Sexual
Abuse. Most artefacts were easy to find but one group member found it difficult since
Emotional Abuse isn’t greatly recognized nor acknowledged in the Caribbean. In total
we had eighteen pieces to choose from. “Animal Abuse” by Anonymous, “A Cry for Help”
by Anonymous and “I’m Just Kidding” by Anonymous were chosen. Our group met
through virtual means, due to Covid-19 and its limitations until physical school was able
to reopen, to discuss which subtopics were the least addressed within society. This
allowed us to deduce the best artefacts that represented the subtopics chosen, these
pieces were shared throughout the group.

In the piece “Animal Abuse”, we discovered that animals’ emotions are not deemed
equal to the emotions of humans or even considered. They are therefore mistreated and
viewed as ‘decorations' or ‘toys’. This is seen by the poet’s use of the language skill of
first person point of view where readers are able to the animal’s experience of abuse.
The second artefact, “A Cry for Help”, taught us that children may feel powerless,
unworthy and afraid, which ultimately leads to social withdrawal, after going through
the experience of abuse. With the poet’s use of the dramatic technique of flashback, the
readers are able to empathize with the persona. By the use of hyperboles with the help
of contrast in the last poem, readers are able to understand the negative impact the
words ‘I’m just kidding’ has on someone. The phrase is used to ‘soften’ direct insults and
make them socially acceptable. It also dismisses a person’s emotions which can seem as
though they are overreacting or being overly sensitive. It was learnt that abuse is a
destructive practice where it negatively affects children, woman, men and even animals.
Abuse affects everyone where anyone can face the acts and consequences of abusive
acts.
WRITTEN REPORT-PIECE ONE

IN THIS REPORT I WILL BE DISCUSSING ABOUT FIRST PIECE OF INFORMATION

WHICH IS THE POEM. IN THIS POEM ‘BEYOND THE MASK’, IT SHOWS US HOW MANY
PEOPLE CAN SEEM SO NORMAL AND HAPPY BUT BEHIND EVERY MASK LIES A
DIFFERENT STORY, THE POET DESCRIBES THE FEEL OF BROKENNESS AND SORROW
AS THEY PRETEND TO PUT ON A BRAVE FACE. THE POET ALSO STATES THAT
NOBODY SEEMS TO BE THERE FOR YOU THROUGH YOUR PROBLEMS, BUT IT’S ALSO
THAT BEING ALONE SOMETIMES HELP YOU HEAL/RECOVER
WRITTEN REPORT-PIECE TWO

IN THIS REPORT I WILL BE SPEAKING ABOUT THE SHORT STORY I OBTAINED. THE
SHORT STORY ‘IT WAS LITTLE THINGS AT FIRST’, BASICALLY SPEAKS ABOUT THE
WRITTERS EXPERIENCE ABOUT HER EXPERIENCING DIFFICULTIES IN HER
RELATIONSHIP AND SOON AFTER LED TO UNFORTUNATE EVENTS, THE BOYFRIEND
IN THE RELATIONSHIP STARTS OFF AS CONTROLLING AND INSECURE ABOUT HER
CLOTHES, WHO SHE TALKS TO ETC. THE STORY IS BASICALLY SHOWING YOU THAT
THE SIGNS ARE ALWAYS THERE AND YOU HAVE TO LOOK OUT FOR IT SO ANYTHING
TRAGIC CAN BE AVOIDED.
WRITTEN REPORT-PIECE THREE

IN THIS REPORT I’LL BE USING THE QUOTE I OBTAINED AFTER RESEARCHING. THE
QUOTE IS PRETTY SHORT AND SIMPLE AND IT SAYS “SPEAK UP AND BE HEARD”,
SPEAKING AGAINST RAPIST CAN BE VERY DIFFICULT FOR MOST PEOPLE BECAUSE OF
MANY REASONS, THEY PROBABLY GOT THREATEN, THEY ARE SCARED OR THEY
DON’T WANT TO GET THE RAPIST IN TROUBLE BECAUSE THE HAVE A CONNECTION
TO THEM, BUT THERE ARE SOME SERIOUS BENEFITS TO SPEAKING UP, WHEN
SPEAKING UP YOU CAN GET THE HELP YOU NEED, GET JUSTICE FOR WHAT
HAPPENED TO YOU AND GAIN CONFIDENCE AGAINST ANYONE AND ANYTHING
ORAL OUTLINE:

Topic: Abuse/Sexual Abuse

Genre:The genre I chose for my oral presentation is a skit, I chose to do a skit because I
thought it was a fun and interesting way to show my thoughts on sexual abuse and to show
how sexual abuse affects someone’s life, hopefully this helps the audience see how much
sexual abuse can have a hold on someone

Sources: I’ll be using my quote “Speak Up and Be Heard”
