Reflection on class 03/23 – Mentalist Theory – Livia Rosi

When it comes to think about the Mentalist Theory one thing that is important to
highlight versus the Behaviorist Theory is how errors are seen. In the
Behaviorist theory, errors are considered undesirable, an incorrect utterance
that cannot be acquired, meanwhile in the Mentalist they are inevitable and also
important to see that the child is acquiring the language.
One thing that caught my attention to the Mentalist Theory is although it is from
a branch of psychology- the cognitive psychologist – and studies how people
acquire, process and store information of the language it doesn’t include other
aspects such as pragmatics. It seems to consider the syntax but not how the
surround can affect this syntax usage. As we know that language is social, how
can we explain how we use specific features of language in one context and do
not use in other contexts. Is language only an individual process or is it affected
by the society?
