CHAPTER I
Introduction

Background of the study

Body shaming is an action or practice of expressing humiliation about another individual’s body
shape or size which is also a form of bullying that can result specially in young age ANAD (2020).
Body shaming is very humiliating and painful and can cause long-term consequences (Abate, 2020).
Body shaming makes people feel bad about their body and consider that other people are often
critical enough of their own appearance. The consequences of body shaming are severe and can
lead to mental health problems.

Body Shaming is a serious and give huge negative effects on the physical and mental health of
a person. Criticizing another person’s appearance is not the only way to body shaming. Criticizing
their own appearance by comparing themselves with other people is also considered body shaming
(Vargas, 2019). It often leads to low self-esteem, low body dissatisfaction, and depressive symptoms,
which is consistent with the growing body of work emphasizing the harmful role of appearance-based
harassment among youth (Gam et al., 2020). Generally, bodies come in various shape, and size.
However, this doesn’t mean that people accidentally body shame other without realizing it
(Tschinkel,2018). Furthermore, people who are overweight and those who look too skinny will be
criticized no matter what clothes they wear or what actions they have done. Therefore, body shaming
becomes more serious and give huge negative effects on the mental health of a person.

According to a study conducted by Yahoo Health with 2000 participants aged 13-64 years,
94% of adolescent females and 64% of adolescent males experienced being shamed online related
to their bodies (Miller, 2016). According to Gam et al. (2020), the 1-year prevalence of body shaming
among school-going adolescent (n=359 is 44.9%. Other studies addressed the consequences of
body shaming on people health and behavior. Body shaming, weight shaming, and appearance-
based harassment are all ways of ridiculing or degrading someone based on their physical
appearance (Duncan, Zimmer-Gembeck, & Furman) (2019). Being overweight or having a higher BMI
served as a risk factor for body shaming (Gam et al., 2020).

It is comparable to the findings of Brewis and Bruening (2018), who discovered that students
who were categorized as overweight or obese experienced more body shaming. Gam et al. (2020)
identified that the overall prevalence of body shaming was 44.9 percent. This figure is greater than
the findings of Bucchianeri, Eisenberg, Wall, Piran, and Neumark-Sztainer (2014) and Eisenberg,
Neumark-Sztainer, and Story (2003), which were 38.2 percent and 30 percent respectively.

This issue is not very healthy in every aspect of the community. People on the victim of this
may acquire psychological disorder like depressive symptoms and suidal thoughts. We need to
address this topic because nowadays body shaming is rampant in our society as obesity is
associated with being lazy, unattractive, and lacking willpower to lose weight. This can really be
harmful physically and psychological.
The main purpose why we conducted this study is that we want to know how body shaming
impacts the mental health of Grade 11 student in Arteche National High School. This study aims to
investigate the effect of body shaming in every individual, to know the different intervention programs
or ways on how we can address this issue, and lastly, to create awareness so that people will stop
body shaming because it is very dangerous and could affect mental and physical health and instill to
the students that no matter what size of their body is, they`re beautiful and nothing wrong with them.

CHAPTER II
Review of Related Literature

According to Sulaiman Mahzan (2021) the polemics of body shaming among our society is not
a new or isolated issue nowadays. There is various modus operandi adopted by some irresponsible
individuals in committing these crimes; including through the increasingly prevalent social media
without guilt. In this context, the victim will undergo various negative effects in terms of mental and
psychological problem including depression, vindictiveness, irritability, loss of self-confidence, eating
disorders and others which in turn can lead to therefore, this study will discuss on the polemics of the
body shaming in terms of the Malaysia legislative framework from various existing laws which are
relevant to be considered to curb this Crim from continuing to spread together the issues irisin. This is
because, there are a handful of people who are less knowledge related to this Crime of bullying.

According to Gabriela Karina Kaawoan (2020) physical appearance of a person is a gift from
God almighty that must be grateful. However, the person body image is often a source of humor and
even contempt. This condition has a physiological effect on victim, such as feeling of interaction,
depression, and suicidal behavior. This article aims to analyze the inclusion of body shaming as a
form of crime and the possible use of the restorative justice paradigm in it`s handling. This article is
the result of the doctrinal laws research with a rule of law approach and conceptual approach. The
results of this study indicate the insulting body image is a criminal offense. Settlement of the cases of
insult of body image can be resolved by using deliberations to reach a consensus as a form of
implementation of the principles of restorative justice.

According to Lisa Cassidy (2019) this chapter examines body shaming in the current social
media atmosphere of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, “Am I hot?” apps, and the like. I will
attend to how body shaming is practiced and experienced online versus how it is in real life (popularly
abbreviated as IRL) in order to make three foundational observations: First, body shaming generally
involves a triangular relation between the body shamer, the one who is body shamed, and the
consuming viewer, which reflects the dynamics of how values are negotiated among members of an
honor group ( a group of individuals bound by an honor code of shared expectation). Second, not
everyone in this shame triangle is subject to shame reversals (which is when the body shamer is
publicly shamed in return for initially shaming someone else). Third, although it might appear at first
that body shaming is never justified, I make the normative argument that body shaming (online and in
real life) can be justified when certain conditions are met. Along the way, this chapter also sketches
several cases of body shaming. The overarching point of this chapter is not to endorse thoughtlessly
and hurtfully shaming each other, but to see how body shaming is used in negotiating values among
community members. This chapter also sketches several cases of body shaming and provides a case
study at the end that focuses especially on the ongoing body shaming of professional athlete Serena
Williams.

According to Johnson, D.E.`s (2001), Research evidence is accumulating to suggest that

shame can be implicated in important wats in student adjustment to the learning environment.
Student survey data spring-fall 2010 suggest that shame is associated with variables thought to be
closely related to student learning-sense of community, burnout, and achievement goals—and
underline the significance of what Nathanson has called the compass of shame in understanding
students struggles with shame. The paper closes with suggestions from the literature on dealing with
student shame in the classroom and in academic advising. Body shaming in both genders. According
to Body shaming is one of the biggest problems in today’s generation. Society doesn’t just find humor
in degrading a woman’s body; they also find humor in degrading a man’s body. Body shaming has
become a problem for both genders. People take their own insecurities and aim them at other people
to make themselves feel better about their own body. Body shaming, while common in both genders,
is especially harmful to women. Ariana Grande received a comment after being compared to Ariel
Winter.

Body Image Body Shaming is a concept used to represent an individual’s self-conscious,

negative emotional reaction to oneself. It appears in people’s failure to meet optimal body standards,
as well as their admission of this failure (Fredrickson & Robert, 1997).

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
 Body Shaming is a modern term and it has become more common in the present days.
Several Mental Health issues arise from body shaming, such as low self-esteem, anxiety,

increase in feelings of low self-esteem, self-image, and self-worth.

self-esteem where he/she start to doubt himself and would even think if that she’s not good
enough to be appreciated then also increases stress and psychiatric orders and may lead

forming friendship.

they want to make fun of other people body. Because people think when you are fat you

So, we need to support everyone that has been bullied and stop other that are being body
shamed. Because all people are beautiful in their on way. Yes, us we all know that self-
comparison is one of the most powerful sources of coping with being body shamed.
