04 Atomic Theory Research

Choose a scientist from (Democritus, John Dalton, JJ Thomson, Ernest Rutherford, Niels
Bohr, Erwin Schrodinger or James Chadwick) . Conduct research using outside sources. Be
sure to choose reliable resources such as government, scientific, and educational websites.
Document all research in your own words. Be sure to properly cite all sources used in your
assignment.
Research and respond to the following:

What were experiences in his life that led to his interest in science and the study of the
atom? (3-5 sentences paraphrased)
Click here to enter text.Democritus's experiences with his father also led to his interest in
science and to the study of the atom. The atom in Democritus' model is an inert solid
that interacts with other atoms mechanically. In contrast, modern, quantum-
mechanical atoms interact via electric and magnetic force fields and are far from inert.

Defend his work on the atom and its contribution to the modern atomic model. (3-5
sentences paraphrased)
Click here to enter text. This was Democritus’ atomic model. It was simply a round sphere
with no electrons, protons, or neutrons. Democritus created the first atomic model. His
contribution helped people with understanding the idea of an atom, and helped other
scientists further look into the science of the atom and its generic makeup.
Point out which contributions are present in the modern atomic model and which were
eventually disproven and thus are not part of the modern model. (3-5 sentences
paraphrased)
