Grooming, Improving, and Managing One’s Self
December 15-17, 2022

NARRATIVE REPORT

Setting goals, learning new skills and knowledge, and adopting healthy habits that
help individuals to grow and improvement are some of the ongoing processes of personal
development and self-improvement.

The San Jose Pili National High School office of Gender and Development together
with the school administration spearheaded the Faculty and Staff Development and
Performance with the theme Grooming, Improving, and Managing One’s Self on December
15 to 17, 2022.

On the first day, the program was started with the singing of National Anthem led
by Ms. Ivy Nocillado. It was followed immediately by an Opening Prayer through an
Audio-Video Presentation. An Opening Remarks was given by Ma’am Teodora B. Togni,
Assitant Principal II, followed by the presentation of participants by the Registration Team
Chairperson, ma’am Annalyn Balaton. Ma’am Marijane Matucad, the school Principal, gave
the overview of the activity. Afterwards, Ma’am Jael P. Olano was called to present the
House rules to be observed for the three-day activity. This was followed by an energizer
lead by sir Ramon M. Selleza, Jr. where the audience was physically prepped for the day’s
sessions with two different speakers.

At around 9:00am, the first session was commenced. First, the speaker was
introduced by Ma’am Marinelle O. Dacunos. The speaker was none other than Rev. Fr.
Marcel Emannuel P. Real, Parish Priest of the Christ the King Parish. Father March
discussed about the topic “Maintaining a Well-Balanced Intrapersonal and Interpersonal
Relationships.” Father Marc started off with a song called “Sino Ako”, and interestingly
ended his talk with the same song, after discussing with enough depth the interpersonal and
intrapersonal relationships that one ought to have as an individual, existing among different
ones.

After Father Marc’s talk, it was followed immediately by the awarding of certificate
of Appreciation to the speaker. The Certificate was awarded by Ma’am Jane, Ma’am Teody,
and Ma’am Glaiz. This was followed by Photo Ops with the speaker, by department.

This was followed by the introduction of the second speaker by ma’am Analyn
Balaton. The next speaker was ma’am Glenda Liza Tornilla, Assistant School Principal II.
The first part of ma’am Glaiz’s talk was an activity where the participants identified a
recurring gender issues in the workplace, and then other groups identified the causes and
solutions to these issues. It was followed by the presentations of output by each group. The
activity took several minutes, so the session was cut short and was continued after the
lunchbreak.

In the afternoon, before the session was resumed, the participants were regrouped
according to the number they have picked. Each table were assigned a specific number and
the participants who picked a certain number were seated on the table with the assigned
number. Afterwards, the session was started with an energizer led by sir Ariel Sanchez, this
one being a pair activity.

The day 2 session resumed, and ma’am Glaize discussed the answers presented by
the groups in the previous activity. She also presented the definitions of the different sexual
orientations and gender preferences, and the presented the notions about gender roles and
biases.

Following the session was the awarding of certificate of appreciation to ma’am Glaiz,
awarded by ma’am Jane, ma’am Teody, and ma’am Rhoda.

The first day was ended by having the participants accomplish the online Evaluation
Form for Day 1 activity via the link posted in the faculty Group Chat.

The second day of Gender and Development activity started with a heart touching
prayer led by Mr. Tonijoe M. Buena. He requested everyone to be sensitive with the
presence of God. It was followed by a Nationalistic Song presented by Ms. Marsha M.
Valiente. It was followed by quick recap on the highlights during the day 1 through a video
clip presented by Mr. Marion Daniel M. Matos, then immediately followed by a thorough
recapitulation given by Ms. Leony B. Montero on yesterday’s event. Everyone enjoyed the
energizer given by Mr. Niňo Salvador V. Hernandez. Next is the reminders delivered by Ms.
Jennifer Largo. Ms. Analyn Balaton updated the number of the day’s participants. Ms.
Alyssa May S. Flororita introduced the speaker of the day who is Michelle DL. Moll, Maed,
LPT, RGC, a guidance counselor of Mabini College.

The speaker was so energetic and talks with the mind. No wonder she got her
audience attention as intelligence has obviously observed on her. As she tackled her very
topic “ESSENTIAL OF SELF-CARE, WELLNESS AND MENTAL HEALTH IN THE
WORKPLACE” the audience enjoys it a lot. She gave emphasis on the strong bounderies a
person should possessed. She also presented a video that talks about hope and support
group system that highlight the significance of mental health and self-care. She also tackled
S-P=R(stress-pressure-result) After her talked the lunch were served.

Before the second session started the awarding of appreciation took place. Ms. Eden
Baranda (JHS) and Ms. Dacunos (SHS) was awarded an Early Bird certificate. Mr. Noel R.
Valiente introduced the next speaker on Action Research Writing in Inclusive Education in
the person of Ms. Maria Theresa B. Obias. She then defines action research and tackled the
diversity of approaches and strategies that could be given to the students specially those
who needs special attention. The advantages of special education, benefits of action research
and ways to help students with special needs.

Ms. April Q. Osea introduced the last speaker, a very active and emphatic
leader, non-other than our very own principal Ms. Marijane B. Matucad. She has discussed
the COP PIN ME this morning which is about to promote performance for both the teachers
and students. This is to appreciate someone for a meritorious accomplishment without

expecting anything in return. She emphasizes the quotation” Winners do not compete, they
set standards”. She also asks everyone to have a journal and reflection on the activity.

Ma’am Jane tackled Performance Review. She requested a new arrangement in the
hall for an enjoyable activity which everyone participated. She discussed what is an effective
communication in both in personal life and in the workplace. She shared that a non-verbal
communication is 55%, vocal is 38% while words is only 7%. The discussion includes
positive and negative body language.

The last day of the training started with an opening prayer which was led by the Ms.
Nena G. Luciano, SHS Master Teacher II in Science. It was followed by the Nationalistic
Song which was lead by Ms. Analyn B. Valencia, Junior High School (JHS) Filipino Teacher.

After the preliminaries, Ms. Lorinel S. Interino, Teacher-in-Charge of Tagbong


Annex, was asked to do the recap for Day 2. In her recap, she mentioned about the first talk
on Essentials of Self-care, Wellness, and Mental Health in the Workplace. Particularly, she
mentioned the participation of everyone in Ms. Moll’s talk. She felt that the topic really
touched the participants’ experiences at work. Almost everyone agreed with all the pointers
of the speaker. In the afternoon, the talk on Performance Review was given by the School
Principal, Dr. Marijane B. Matucad. Particularly, Ma’am Lorinel said that the group had so
much fun on the motivational activity which the group 2 has won over. Lastly, the talk on
Action Research Writing on Inclusive Education was said unique by Ms. Lorinel
emphasizing that this is not often talked about. After the recap, the group re-energized with
the help of Mr. Edgardo M. Ng.

When everyone has already settled, Session VI began. The facilitators were
introduced by Mr. Rodyrick N. Arazas, Teacher-in-Charge of Boncao Annex. The last session
can be a vision of a culminating activity since the participants will have to undergo a team
building through group dynamic activities. With SJPNHS’ ESP Marias, the participants were
grouped into teams. Each team were given tasks that tested their camaraderie, fairness, and
competitiveness. In the end, the ESP teachers stressed that in the workplace, it is not only
important that everyone does their job right—teaching the young minds. It is also important
to do this task with the help of one another; hence, building a healthy work environment.

After the last session, Ms. Armi F. Baracena, Master Teacher in JHS Science, was
called to give her impression. She said that the GAD training this year was unique in so
many ways. One, that we did it first-time with our new principal. Second, the talks were
more centered on each individuality and how this individuality is communicated across the
SJPNHS community, and lastly, a team-building was done to conclude all the sessions.

With this, the new principal, Dr. Marijane posed a challenge among the participants—
sustain healthy and happy work environment at all times. The Faculty President, Mr.
Estman A. Tejares, on behalf of all the teaching and non-teaching staff, happily accepted the
challenge.
At the end of the program, certificates were given to the participants. At six in the evening,
the socials began.
