Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study

Due to social networks' rising popularity and widespread use

in daily life, it is now a concern to incorporate these
social network environments into the classroom. Nowadays,
many social networking services are used for reasons other
than those for which they were intended. People initially
used these platforms for collaborative work, but now they
are also used for communication.
producing blogs, tagging and social bookmarking, sharing
multimedia and other content, and establishing digital
identities.

Majority of students spend at least one hour every day on

social networking platforms. Students use laptop computers,
cell phones, and personal computers to access social
networking websites. According to Common Sense Media (2018),
70% of teens use social media often throughout the day.
Messaging and texting can be used for a variety of purposes
other than communication. They can also help young
individuals acquire and master key skills.
When it comes to communicating between people, Facebook
Messenger has caused huge breakouts across the world. It has
been a valuable tool for social interaction by allowing
individuals to create, share, and exchange thoughts and
information in online communities and networks for free.

Through Messenger, students have been extended relevant

information about COVID-19 and learnt topics related to the
real-life contexts that emerged in the social media such as
legalities, health and environmental issues, Toquero, C. M.
D. (2021). It has also been utilized to let children engage
with their classmates and instructors, while being
physically isolated, which was very useful during the
pandemic.
In the past, instant messaging (IM) was considered "a teen
thing" rather than a serious tool for education, K. Thomas
(2001). As teenagers who rely on IM as a communication tool
arrive on college campuses, however, IM usage will become
more prevalent in higher education.

IM has generated increasing awareness of its value for
educational purposes despite its slow adoption in
educational settings. E. R. Cohn. (2002), urged universities
and faculty members to adopt IM and train themselves in
using it, as IM use by prospective and current college
students has become pervasive.

Several studies have looked into and debated the use of

social networking for education, and students generally had
favorable opinions of them. Few studies, meanwhile,
concentrated on the total transfer of course material to a
social networking site that simultaneously served as a
learning management system. Following a review of the
literature on Facebook, Wang, Woo, Quek, Yang, and Liu
(2012) discovered that numerous research had been conducted
on the usage of Facebook and social networks in general, the
impact of instructors' self-disclosure on Facebook, and the
academic performance of Facebook users. However,
Few research have looked at how well Facebook functions as a
learning management system. Therefore, the goal of this
study was to investigate how students felt about utilizing
Facebook as a learning management system (LMS) for a class.

Students taking classes usually means showing up to class at

a particular time, sitting through a lengthy lecture and
then going directly to their next class. If they have vacant
classes, they may be able to take a break, but they must
stay on campus. It will be a long, intense, and exhausting
day. Furthermore, they need to go home, to do homework,
sleep and do it all again the next day.
With online classes, students and teachers can do their own
work at their own pace. This means much less pressure and
intensity.

Educational apps do more than just impart knowledge.

Additionally, they are improving the overall educational
system. There are apps that connect teachers and parents so
that parents can receive the most recent status report.
These applications have improved how schools, universities,
and other educational institutions operate.
Students no longer have to worry about missing lectures.
They may effortlessly follow the lecture through the app and
stay up to date with their course material. The ease with
which students can acquire knowledge on a variety of
disciplines through apps may lessen their workload. They can
listen to the lecture again if they are unable to comprehend
it right away.

Meishar-Tal et al. (2012) explored the educational benefits

of Facebook as an LMS and discovered that students expressed
pleasure with studying using Facebook and messenger, and
that they would be happy to keep using these apps in their
discussion groups for subsequent courses. Blackboard and
Facebook were contrasted by Parslow, Lundqvist, Williams,
Ashton, and Evans in 2008. They saw that the students took
full advantage of the chances provided by Facebook's
flexibility to totally manage the environment's content and
audience. They were very much at the center of the platform
and environment. When Wang et al. (2012)
a Facebook discussion group as an LMS and discovered that
the majority of the students were happy with Facebook's
performance as an LMS.

Purpose of the Study

The aim of this study was to design and develop a
mobile application for teachers and students during online
class. This study shall benefit the following entities:
To the Teachers. The application is more convenient to use
for the teachers in performing online lectures as it
provides alternative ways to contact their students in a
certain subject.
To the Students. The proposed application provides students
a fair access to their subjects and teachers.

Objective of the Study

The main aim of this study is to design and develop a
mobile application that will help the students and the
teachers to communicate easily. Specifically, it aims to
answer the following:
Create quick and simple interactions,
 • Prepare flexible materials that can change according to
the needs of learner,
• Design access of device and interaction by considering the
different devices and standards, • Contribute to the
learning experience using the characteristics and
constraints of mobile devices,
• Use mobile technologies as a learning facilitator not a
tool for only distributes learning contents,
• Design materials with learner-centered approach

Definition of Term

The students can use the Messenger group to ask the teacher
questions or request explanations about the lesson in order
to resolve these issues right away. Furthermore, messaging
groups on Messenger allowed for speedy contact, including
private messages if the students desired them.

Group Chat’s
Because you and other people can chat and talk together in
Facebook Messenger's Group Chats (GC), this feature is
popular for connecting with others. The students may readily
share with others, which is another benefit. Compared to
using text brigade or text blitz, it is more practical. Some
instructors share photographs of the assigned work to
students in addition to providing updates in their own GCs.

FACEBOOK PAGES
You can upload and download soft copies, PDFs, and other
files—of advanced lectures, forms to fill out, and other
things—via the Facebook Pages and Group Page functionality
as well.
Additionally, you can collaborate in groups on Facebook and
increase your language and literacy abilities. Therefore,
don't undervalue Facebook because it will benefit you in
Education Matters on the other side.

ADVANTAGES OF USING FACEBOOK

Since the majority of people are familiar with Facebook and
have used it, Facebook is highly convenient for students,
teachers, and parents to utilize. And the price is not
excessive. To use it, a user only requires a data
subscription.

You require a load to send a message to someone, unlike text

messaging. Additionally, it offers a lot of features that
may be used to educate people as well as entertain them.

Chapter 2

METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the researcher's methodology for

eliciting data from students who  develop the study of the
software development methodology, the study's scope and
limitations, data collection methods, data sources, and
software development tools. The data collection techniques
are selected, explained, and planned to ensure success.

Software Development Methodology

Rapid Application Development (RAD). Rapid application
development (RAD) is an agile project management strategy
popular in software development. The key benefit of a RAD
approach is fast project turnaround, making it an attractive
choice for developers working in a fast-paced environment
like software development. This rapid pace is made possible
by RAD’s focus on minimizing the planning stage and
maximizing prototype development.

By reducing planning time and emphasizing prototype

iterations, RAD allows project managers and stakeholders to
accurately measure progress and communicate in real time on
evolving issues or changes. This results in greater
efficiency, faster development, and effective
communication.
The main objective of rapid application development
methodology is to accelerate the entire software development
process. The goal is easily achievable because it allows
active user participation in the development process shamal,
K. (2021).

The first phase that we should use is outlining

requirements which can be corresponds the scope meeting and
use to fixed during the development, the second one if User
Input which we use to build the design using prototype, The
third one is the Construction it transformed the operational
models, and the last one phase we can use is Finalization
this can students can use to guide on how we should use the
applications. Hera are some phases that have complete
definitions that students can be use to application:
Outlining requirements. This describes the prerequisites.
This stage corresponds to the project scoping meeting. Even
though it is shorter than in other project management
approaches, the planning phase is nevertheless essential to
the project's success. Developers, clients (software users),
and team members communicate at this stage to define the
project's goals and expectations as well as any current or
potential problems that would need to be fixed during the
development.

User input. Once the project is scoped out, it’s time to

jump right into development, building out the user design
through various prototype iterations. This is the meat and
potatoes of the RAD methodology—and what sets it apart from
other project management strategies. All the bugs and kinks
are worked out in an iterative process. The developer
designs a prototype, the client (user) tests it, and then
they come together to communicate on what worked and what
didn’t.
In this phase, the users will work with developers to create
and develop one or more prototypes that cover the outlined
system requirements. This is a continuous phase wherein the
users interact with the prototype and provide feedback until
a true final product is approved. The researchers shall
produce a detailed system area model, an outline system
design, and an implementation plan, shamal, K. (2021).

Construction: In this phase, the design phase's prototypes

and beta systems are transformed into operational models.
Developers may build the final functioning model more
quickly than they might by using a typical project
management methodology because the majority of the issues
and adjustments were handled during the rigorous iterative
design phase.
The phase is divided into numerous more compact steps and it
includes:

• Planning for quick construction

• Creation of programs and applications
• Coding
• System testing and unit testing
This is the second ongoing phase, which depends on user
feedback. The system's design, which was initially outlined
in the Design Phase, must have been finished by the
researcher. And shamal, K. develops and tests an application
program to put that design into practice. (2021).

Finalization. The finished product is launched during this

phase of execution. It comprises user training in addition
to data conversion, testing, and switchover to the new
system. While the coders and customers continue to scan the
system for problems, all final adjustments are done.
Developers add certain finishing touches, such as testing,
conversion, interface work, or user training, once the
product is eventually accepted. The product is prepared for
delivery once stability and longevity have been thoroughly
evaluated. The researchers must have completed, delivered,
and implemented the final system. Distribute user guides or
instruct people on how to use the application. and offer
assistance to address any issues that surface as soon as the
application.

Scope and Delimitation

The researchers created a mobile application that is

messenger-like that helps the students in their learning and
for the teachers to monitor the activities of their
students.

Data Gathering Techniques

The following data gathering techniques were utilized
by the researchers to effectively collect information about
the topic.

Interview. The researchers conducted interviews to gain

knowledge in their project. Interviewing the students
together with their parents and the teachers would be
beneficial to know which feature will be added to the
application.

Survey Questionnaire. Researchers also used survey

questionnaires to collect the needed information from the
target users.

Sources of Data
Conduction of online or face to face interviews will be
conducted with the students, parents, and the teachers.
As for the survey questionnaire, it will be done by
disseminating the questionnaire through Google Forms and
posting it on Facebook and in other social media platforms.

Software Development Tools

The following tools shall be used by the researchers to
develop the application.

Android Studio. Android Studio is the official Integrated

Development Environment (IDE) for Android app development,
based on IntelliJ IDEA. A unified environment where you can
develop for all Android devices. This shall be the main tool
to be utilized by the researchers in developing their
application. This is where the coding and debugging will
take place.

Adobe Illustrator. Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics

editor and design program developed and marketed by Adobe
Inc. The researchers shall use this tool to make a logo for
the application.
