Safety Calendar
As administrators start planning for a new school year, school safety should be at the top
of their list. They are responsible for not just the student’s safety but all staff members. Being on
the same page, with clear communication, and expectations each stakeholder should know
God forbid, a situation requires enacting these procedures in a live active event. Administrators
must be prepared with a plan for all emergency procedures, training staff, debriefing,
collaborating, in aligning this plan to the school’s vision and mission, while making sound moral

At the beginning of each school year, all district employees meet at the annual district
kick off meeting to get everyone geared up for the start of a new school year. Once this meeting
concludes, all employees head back to their school site to discuss site wide professional
development. Throughout the professional development meeting teachers go over the school
expectations and procedures. This is where teachers learn, discuss, and develop how their
students, including the teachers will follow the district wide emergency expectations and
procedures. Teachers read and discuss what the expectations and procedures for fire drills,
lockdown drills, shelter in place drills, earthquake drills, and tornado drills will be for that school
year. This meeting allows teachers to collaborate with their grade level teams on how to develop
lesson plans incorporating how students can be respectful, responsible, and safe during each of
these emergency drills. They take this plan during the first few days of school starting and
develop anchor charts about the classroom expectations each student will show as we make sure
During an emergency drill there will be members of the leadership team that are not in
charge of a classroom of students. For example, as a fire drill is being practiced employees like
Liaison, and School Nurse go to their designated section where students evacuate the building.
Once all grade levels are at their designated spots, these staff members relay back to the front
office if their section is all safe and secured. They look for each grade level hold up a green or
red sign signaling all students in that class are safe and accounted for, or their red sign stating
someone from their classroom is not with them and do not know where they are. Once all
students have been accounted for these staff members give all grade level teams the signal that
they can all come back into the school. Once all students get back into the school building and
resume there learning, this safety team discuss what went well during the drill and what they can
improve on. They meet briefly after each drill always looking and discussing how they can
improve. If for some reason the meeting cannot happen right after the drill, the team will discuss
this information through email. If there is a change to the expectations or procedures teachers
will learn about this information through email, as well as a printed copy that can be replaced
Throughout the development of this plan the emergency procedures and expectations
were developed by the administrative leadership team. During the summer months, this group
meets and develops what the plans for all emergency procedures should look like, aligning with
the three school rules to be respectful, responsible, and safe. The group develops a definition for
teachers to understand what drill will be scheduled throughout the school year. They also list
what each classroom should do to complete each emergency expectation in the safest way
possible.
When the plan was created, the administrative leadership team discussed the importance
of getting all students involved when planning and practicing for emergency procedure drills. All
12
classrooms will have time to practice these procedures aligning with our school vision, to reach,
engage, and inspire all students with a high-quality public education. Creating classroom
expectations and collaborating with students how these procedures should look and apply
prepares students as we to aim for our goal of graduating 100 % of our student’s college and
career ready.
The state of Oklahoma requires all schools under Oklahoma statutes that all schools must
have a specific number of fire drills, tornado drills, and other safety drills planed throughout the
year. It is the responsibility of the administrator to abide by these laws, planning and scheduling
over each month of the school year when to practice each drill. For example, during the first and
second semester schools must practice a fire drill within the first 15 days of that semester. If the
school does not meet these requirements the school administrator could face legal consequences,
In conclusion, each year administrators must plan for the potential emergency events that
could happen at any given moment. It is common now for schools to face possible emergency
threats to students and staff. Throughout this assignment, administrators must make sure each
stakeholder knows and understands what to do, where to be, and how maneuver through an
emergency at school in the safest way possible. Therefore, administrators must develop an
emergency plan with procedure and expectations, clearly communicate that plan, and prepare for
these potential emergencies upholding the schools rules of being respectful, responsible, and
safe.
