Practice Sheet - 2

Unit 1: Respiration

1. Write the equation of respiration also mention products and reactants.

Answer: Glucose + oxygen Carbon dioxide + water
Reactants: Glucose, oxygen
Products: Carbon dioxide, water
2. What is combustion?
Answer: When we burn fossil fuel, the carbon in it combines with oxygen
from the air and forms carbon dioxide. This is called combustion.
3. Draw a carbon cycle by labelling photosynthesis, respiration, feeding, and
combustion.

4. What are meteoroids, meteors?

Answer: Objects in space that are smaller than an asteroid are called
meteoroids.
When meteoroids enter Earth’s atmosphere they are called meteors.
5. In the past, asteroids have collided with earth. Scientists believe this has
caused mass extinction.
a. Explain what is meant by a mass extinction.
Ans: The loss of large numbers of species are called mass extinction.
b. Explain how an asteroid collision can cause mass extinction.
Ans: Around 67 million years ago, an asteroid collided with Earth. The
collision affected the whole planet, not just the surrounding area, because
it threw huge quantities of rock and dust into the air. The dust in the air
meant that less light reached the Earth’s surface.
Most scientists think that the changes in climate, caused by the asteroid
impact, explain why dinosaurs became extinct around this time. Not only
dinosaurs, but also many other species on Earth, were destroyed as a
result of the climate change following the asteroid collision. The asteroid
caused a mass extinction.
6. Write what are the impacts of climate .
Ans:
a. More extreme weather events (See explanation from page 40 of book)
b. Less predictable rainfall (See explanation from page 40 of book)
c. Rising sea levels (See explanation from page 41 of book)
7. Fill in the gaps.
Fossil fuel contains ________. This came from the______________, fats and
______________ in the dead organisms. When we burn fossil fuel, the
carbon in it combines with _______ from the air and forms ______.
Carbon, Carbohydrates, proteins, oxygen, carbon dioxide.
