ME105 Lecture 5 - Dimensioning PDF
Dimensioning
1. All engineering and technical drawings must be clearly dimensioned
2. Clarity of information necessary for use on site, be it construction,
manufacturing, mining, designing, power generation/distribution
3. Unless specified, dimensions are normally specified in SI units (mm)
4. Tolerances are allowances provided for especially where components fit into
each other
5. Tolerances in dimensions are often necessary especially in manufacturing
and fabrications.
6. Automatic dimensioning with accuracy reducing dimensional errors.
7. All variables required for dimensions in AutoCAD can be set through the
Dimension Style Manager dialogue box (Dimension – Dimension Style)

Dimension Types
There are several dimension types used depending on
object and orientation
Familiarise with 7 of the common dimension types
1. Horizontal - Hor
2. Vertical – Ver
3. Angular - Ang
4. Diametral - Dia
5. Radial – Rad
6. Aligned - Ali
7. Leader - Lea

Modifying Dimensions
1. Normally there should be no need to modify dimensions as they are
automatically derived
2. When necessary, especially to change labels, use the Dimension Style
Manager dialogue box to change parameters and then update
3. Different dimension styles can be saved in the same drawing using ISO
labels
4. Parameters that can be changed for dimensions:
1. Type of arrows
2. Position of dimension text
3. Offset distance from origin
4. Extension above dimension line
5. Dimension text and its height
