Cariñosa–
A local dance in the Philippines that originated
from the Panay Islands. The dance represents
the shy mannerisms of Filipina during the
Spanish colonial era. The important props of
these dance are fans and handkerchiefs. It is
also known as the courtship dance.
Pandanggo sa Ilaw–
An ethnic dance in the Philippines that
originated in Lubang Island, Mindoro, it is
referred to as the “Dance of Lights”. It is
featured the balancing of the dancers with
three lamps placed on each hand and on top
of the head.
Kuratsa–
It is originated in the province of Leyte
and Samar, referred to as a courtship
dance where they imitate the courtship
movements of a rooster and a hen.
Sayaw sa Bangko–
A traditional folk dance that originated from the
province of Pangasinan. Sayaw sa bangko literally
translates to “dance on the top of a bench”,
which are the width of the benches is only 6
inches. The dancers also show off their skills by
throwing the women upwards in the air.
Pandanggo Oasiwas–
Oasiwas means “to be swung around” as they
dance using the props oil lamps that placed in
nets or cloths. It is traditionally performed as a
symbol of fishermen’s gratitude to the gods for
their wonderful catch of fish.
Pantomina–
A type of dance that originated in Bicol, which
originally performed by the newlyweds to
show their unwavering love to their family and
relatives
 Folk Dances
Tinikling –
A Philippine folk dances that originated from the
province of Leyte, a Visayan Island. It imitates the
movements of a Tikling bird as they hop and jump
across grass stems, run over tree branches, or escape
from the bamboo traps set by farmers. The dancers
skillfully maneuvering between two large bamboo piles
being operated by two other dancers. It contains
unique steps and timing depending in the dance
routine.
Maglalatik –
A Philippine folk dance that originated.from
the province of Laguna, in Binan. The word
“latik” refers to the sweet delicacy achieved by
boiling coconut milk. The main prop and
instrument are called the “bao” or coconut
shell, which sometimes the dances also called
Singkil–
A dance originated from the Maranao people
of Mindanao. It is somehow similar to the
Tinikling as they perform using a bamboo pole,
however, the bamboo pole arranged
differently.
Itik-Itik –
A cultural dance in the Philippines that
originated from the province of Surigao. It
represents the translation of its name Itik,
which means duck. The dancers imitate the
movements of a duck such as flying, wading,
and even short steps in the most creative way
possible.
Binasuan–
A tribal dance in the Philippines that originated
from the province of Pangasinan. It is a dance
featuring the balancing skills of the dancers,
which they execute the routine with glasses
filled with rice wine placed on their hands and
on top of their heads.
Kappa Malong-Malong–
A dance originated from the Maranao tribes of the
Mindanao Island. The costumes are called the “malong”,
which are beautifully and colorfully made by the
Maranao tribes. The “malong” is a traditional “tube
skirt” that is hand-woven in multi-colored cotton cloth.
The dance routine is being improved and presented in
every different manners from generation to generation.
