UNIT 14
Task 1
- Coding: a list of step-by-step instructions that get computers to do what you want them to
do.
- Unplugged-coding: a collection of learning activities that introduce coding and
programming through engaging games that only use cards, crayons, markers, etc.
- STEM field: a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific
disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
- Cyber security: the application of technologies, processes and controls to protect systems,
networks, programs, devices and data from cyber attacks.
- Pre-literate: lacking a written language.
- Gender gap: the difference in earnings between women and men.

Task 2
1. Paragraph 2, line 2 (Primary schools and nurseries are key to influencing the next
generation of professionals by igniting an early interest in the STEM fields.) I agree with
that statement, children have an interest in new things. Introducing computers and
teaching them about how to use is not a bad idea.
2. Paragraph 4, line 3 (In search of change, bodies such as Women in IT have been set up to
help inspire women to work in the industry, however, a vast percentage of the problem
comes down to the choices a child makes and the influences they face in their early
years.) I agree with that statement, many women should be able to freely work in this
field without being looked down upon due to the gender gap that says men are more
powerful than women.
3. Paragraph 9, line 3 and 4 (There has been a shift in the past decade as to what a ‘digital
job’ is, and relatively new professions, including SEO specialists and data analysts, now
fall under this remit. It’s our role to prepare young people for the new economy, with a
highly desirable skill set that stands the next generation in good stead.) I agree with that
statement, the latest innovations that can help human life can be found in the application
of technology.
4. Paragraph 5, line 1 (Early life experiences often shape our future interests which is why it
is the responsibility of early years educators to broaden the horizons of young children,
and to change the stigma around girls in technology through the use of fun, engaging
learning tools.) I agree with that statement, the first step for children can know and use
technology is educators, so educators have an important role here.
5. Paragraph 7, line 2 (A company determined to address the gender gap in technology,
Primo Toys created Cubetto to develop coding skills and enhance teaching practice with
a tool that helps children realize their full potential to become the creators and not just
consumers of technology.) I agree with that statement, children will be interested in
learning technology if they use game media.

Task 5
1. To describe the meaning of a laptop and the parts that are on the laptop.
2. a) General Classification
Laptop, often called a notebook, is a portable personal computer with a clamshell
form factor, suitable for mobile use. Although originally there was a distinction between
laptops and notebooks, the former being bigger and heavier than the latter, as of 2014, there
is often no longer any difference. Laptops are commonly used in a variety of settings, such
as at work, in education, and for personal multimedia.
b) Descriptions
A laptop combines the components, inputs, outputs and capabilities of a desktop
computer, including the display screen, speakers, a keyboard, and pointing devices (such as
a touchpad or trackpad) into a single unit. Most 2016- era laptops also have integrated
webcams and built-in microphones. The device can be powered either from a rechargeable
battery or by mains electricity from an AC adapter. Laptops are diverse devices and
specialised kinds, such as rugged notebooks for use in construction or convertible
computers, have been optimized for specific uses. The hardware specifications, such as the
processor speed and memory capacity significantly vary between different types, makes, and
models.
3. Use of technical terms, for example on paragraph 2 sentence 1, ‘A laptop combines the
components, inputs, outputs and capabilities of a desktop computer, including the display
screen, speakers, a keyboard, and pointing devices (such as a touchpad or trackpad) into a
single unit'.
