Atis mosquito repellent helps fight dengue
September 16, 2015 6:17 am
By Ma. Cristina C. Arayata
MANILA, Sept. 15 (PNA) — As the country continues its battle against dengue, did you know that the
Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) has developed an alternative mosquito
repellent using atis (sugar apple)?
Called the Atis Lotion Mosquito Repellent, the product targets preventing mosquito bites, which would not only
bring itchiness and inflammation to individuals, but might also trigger dengue.
According to the Department of Health (DOH), there were 55,079 suspected dengue cases recorded from
January to Aug. 8. The figure is 9.15 percent higher than the 50,462 recorded cases in the same period last year.

Other mosquitoborne diseases like malaria and filiariasis can also be avoided using the Atis lotion mosquito
repellent.
It was formulated using atis (anona squamosal) leaves extracts mixed with other locally available materials.
PCHRD, an attached agency of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), said the lotion uses a
washable, mineral oilbased formulation. Unlike other commerciallyavailable repellents, the atis lotion didn’t
use a chemicalbased formulation. It is composed of 10.125 percent mineral oil, 1.02 percent Sodium
Carboxymethyl Cellulose, 9 percent Propylene Glycol, 0.22 percent Methyl Paraben, 0.135 percent Propyl
Paraben, 70 percent water and 10 percent plant extract.
Atis is a common fruit tree in the Philippines and is generally propagated by seed. Atis trees are said to be
suitable to welldrained soil types, including sands and limestone based soils.
While the DOH consistently levels up its efforts to fight dengue, it’s good to know that another government
agency does its part and was able to provide an alternative repellent through research.
PCHRD is one of the attached agencies of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) — the agency
behind the OL trap.
The OL trap, developed by DOST Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI), was designed to detect
and control the denguecarrying mosquitoes (Aedes Aegypti). It works by attracting these mosquitoes to lay
eggs on a paddle drenched with organic solution, which kills the eggs and larvae. (PNA)
