The use of botulinum toxin in Botox injections for both cosmetic and therapeutic reasons.

Explain why this toxin can be injected but not ingested.

Botulinum toxin is an FDA-approved product that is injected into facial muscles in
small quantities to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, usually in the forehead,
brow, or around eyes and mouth. It is also used to change the size of the eye opening, the
aperture, or to change and elevate the position of the eyebrows. Botulinum toxin is most
frequently used to treat forehead wrinkles, frown lines between the eyebrows, and
“crow’s feet” or “smile lines” around the eyes.
Botulinum toxin works by denervating the junction between the nerve and the
muscle. The action potentials of the nerve and muscle are denervated after a small amount
of substance is injected at the base of the muscle. The muscle's ability to contract is then
restored as the body grows fresh nerve muscle fibers. These action potentials can
regenerate in 3 to 4 months, and the toxin can remain in the body for up to 6 months. To
achieve the desired effect, each patient will choose their own unique "sweet spot" of time
to re-administer botulinum toxin. Due to the strength of the patient's muscles and the
dosage, they inform patients of the general range in which botulinum toxin will be
effective. Their "tolerance" when the wrinkles return is the unidentified contributing
factor. They slowly reappear, in other words. Botulinum toxin might be needed sooner if
the patient is aggressive with their appearance. They may wait more than five months for
reinjection if they are more tolerable.
If you ingested the botulinum toxin, the first signs of botulism are typically
weakness in the muscles that control your eyes, face, mouth, and throat. The neck, arms,
chest, and legs could all become weak as a result. Additionally, botulism can weaken the
breathing muscles, which can cause difficulties breathing and possibly death.
