What Is Clause?
A clause is a group of words which consist of one subject-verb pair.
Type of clause
1. Independent clause
Independent clause is a clause that can stand alone and already has a complete meaning or the
meaning of the clause can be understood without the help of other clauses.
Ex : I buy a new book
2. Dependent clause
Dependent clause is a clause that depends on another clause. This clause does not form a complete
meaning. And always contain subordinate conjunctions.
Ex : Before I go to my friend's house

The clause is divided into three :


A. Adjective Clause
A clause (with subject and verb) that functions as adjective
1. Relative pronoun (RP), Relative pronouns are pronouns that function to connect phrases,
words, or sentences, which explain nouns or pronouns.
FORMAT: RP+ SUBJECT+VERB
Relative pronoun: Who, Whom, whose, which, that
Ex: she is the woman whom I always meet in the garden
2. Relative adverb (RA), A relative adverb is a word used to connect phrases or clauses, and
usually describes place, time, cause, and how.
FORMAT: RA+SUBJECT+VERB
Relative adverb: when, where, why, how
Ex: I ask him how to play the piano
B. Noun Clause
Noun clause is a dependent clause that functions as a noun (noun). A noun clause can function as a
component of a sentence such as: subject, object of verb, object of preposition, and subject
complement and can be replaced with pronoun it.

C. Adverbial Clause
Adverbial clause is dependent clause that functions as an adverb and provides information about a
verb, adjective, or adverb that is independent clause. Adverbial clause is preceded by a subordinate
conjunction (after, because, when, though, although, etc).
FORMAT: CONNECTOR+S+V
