 The writers of this century followed only
external performance or style and method
of ancient classical writers but they lacked
sublimity and grandeur. This classicism is
called Pseudo Classicism.
 The famous writes of this century like Pope,
Addison, Johnson followed Horace, Virgil,
and Cicero who made Roman literature
famous during the rule of Emperor Agustan.
 The main quality of Pope’s poetry is its corrections.
 Alexander Pope had perfected the heroic couplet
and he made use of his technical skill in translating. “
homer’s Iliad and Odyssey which meant year of hard
work”.
 Pope had enjoyed a tremendous reputation during
his life time but after some decades of his death, he
was bitterly attacked during 19th century that it was
doubted whether pope was poet at all.
 But in 20th century, this reaction subsided and now it
was admitted by great critics that although pope
was prosaic yet his poetry was indestructible.
 He is the supreme master of epigrammatic style.
 “Essay on criticism”.
 The Rape of lock.
 It is mock heroic poem in which he
celebrated the theme of stealth, by lord
petre of hair from the head of Miss
Arable. Poem is written in jest yet given
the form of an epic, investing frivolous
event with mock seriousness.
 “the Duncial”
 Alexander Pope is generally regarded as one
of the most important of the 18th centaury
English Poets.
 His first major achievement was a translation
of Homer’s Iliad into rhymed heroic couplets.
He was a major figure in the revival of the
classics and a nation test based on Roman
poetry, especially Horace.
 As a poet, he was renowned for his satirical
works, especially the Duncaid, Rape of the
lock, and Essay on criticism, as well as his
mastery of the heroic couplet.
