Course Description The course will introduce the student to the field known as Science, Technology, and
Society. STS is an interdisciplinary field that examines how science and technology shape
societies, cultures, and the environment and how social, cultural, and environmental factors
shape the development of science and technology. This course focuses on the development
of science and technology in areas such as information and communication technologies;
the biological sciences including biotechnology, genetics, and genomics; medical sciences
and technologies; energy sciences and technologies; and ecological and environmental
sciences. This course also examines and reflects on science and technology’s impact on
the global village economically, politically, socially, and environmentally.

Course Outcomes At the end of the course, the student should be able to
1. Discuss the influence of current scientific knowledge and technologies on the
social, cultural, economic and environmental dimensions of global societies.
2. Draw on case studies to discuss the extent to which current technologies has
positively and/or adversely affected human lives.
3. Understand the personal and social responsibility that accompanies technological
development and utilization

Delivery Mode and The class meets twice a week for a total of 3 hours for lectures and discussions. The
Teaching Method discussion will focus on developments in science and technology in terms of their
interactions with social, cultural, environmental, economic and political issues. Class
participation is essential for understanding multidisciplinary perspectives.

Attendance Lecture attendance is expected since learning is motivated through active discussion,
demonstration, and sharing of ideas on the topics studied. Strict adherence to the provisions
of the TSU Code on student attendance will be observed.
Preparation In order to get the most out of the course, each student is expected to come to class
prepared for discussion of the scheduled topic. This may include pre-reading relevant
articles/ materials as well as sharing insights and previous experiences to the class
discussion.

dishonesty will be dealt with severely as they threaten the integrity of the academic system.
All reports should have an originality statement signed by the student, stating the work is
his/her own, and all work that is not his/hers should be properly acknowledged and
referenced.

Policies Online/ Flexible Teaching and Learning:

1. Microsoft Teams will be used as the primary platform in every class;


thus, all students are advised to download and install the aforementioned
application. Just go to office.com. and login using your
@student.tsu.edu.ph account, choose Teams from the list of
applications, from there your enrolled subjects will appear;
2. To uphold delivery of quality instruction, the class may also use added
online platforms and applications like Zoom Cloud Meeting, FB
Messenger, Viber, WhatsApp and the like.
3. No Special Examination will be administered unless an excuse letter
from parent/ guardian or medical certificate noted by the guidance
counsellor and class adviser is presented
4. Attendance will be checked every meeting. A student must complete
85% of the session in order for him/her be given credit for attendance.
5. Assignments are to be submitted on time. Failure to submit assignments
is equivalent to a grade of 5.0.
