Section 1
As a teenager, you are no longer a child and you are not yet an adult.
Most teenagers like music, mobile phones, computers, films and fashionable
clothes. They love hanging out with their friends. These things are often called
‘teen culture’.
People first used the word ‘teenager’ in the 1940s. There have been teen culture
movements in most decades since. Mods and rockers in the 1960s; hippies in the
early 1970s. Then in 1976 punk started in Britain and became the fashion of the
day. And so it continues – everything lasts for a while until a new fashion takes
over.

Section 2
Because of the Internet, teenage culture is global. When a new word becomes
cool, everybody knows about it on the web.
The same thing happens with bands and films. What’s popular in America this
week will be big in Europe and around the world a week later.
Fashion is important in teenage culture. All over the world, teenagers wear the
same clothes. The same clothes brands are popular from Alaska to Australia.

Section 3
We asked some teenagers in London what they like and dislike and what teen
culture means for them.
Cheryl As we’re young we’re able to have a lot more fun and do what we
want really.

Kin Do what I like. Dress as I like. Have my own image …

Titilope Well, I enjoy reading a lot and I enjoy working with kids as well and
I do like music.

Eldar I love horse riding, going to the gym.

Titilope Enjoy it while you can!

Come on, Sarah! It’s time to get up.
For most students in Britain, the school day starts between eight thirty and nine o’clock.
People travel to school using many different kinds of transport. They cycle, they walk
and they come in cars. Sarah catches the school bus.
The school day starts with registration where the teacher checks everybody is in school.
Each lesson lasts for an hour. Sarah’s first lesson is maths. At the end of the lesson a bell
rings. Students move to another classroom for the next lesson. Sarah’s next lesson is history.

Section 2
After two or three lessons there is a break. This is fifteen minutes when students go out
into the playground to have fun after all that concentration!
After break it’s back to work. Sometimes special subjects like science last for two lessons –
a ‘double period’. They can be really hard work!
But there’s always the lunch break to look forward to. There’s usually time to play games,
talk with friends, read a book or catch up with some homework.

Section 3
After lunch it’s back to the classroom. The main subjects in the school timetable are English,
maths and science. IT is also popular. Then there’s French or Spanish, history and
geography. Students also study art, music and PE.
The final bell goes at three thirty to mark the end of school. School lasts for seven hours
and nearly five hours are lessons. But that’s not the end of the school day.
Students have homework every day. This can be from one to three hours of schoolwork
at home in the evening. Tonight Sarah’s got English homework.

Questions
So how much do you know now about the school day in Britain?
How long is the school day?

Section 1
People love animals. But some of the world’s animals are in danger of extinction.
There are several reasons for this. But the most serious threat to animals is from man.
In some parts of the world people collect rhino horn for use in medicine. Others carve
ornaments for tourists from ivory from elephant tusks. Shark’s fin soup is a favourite
in many restaurants. Chimpanzee and whale meat are popular with some people.

Section 2
Another big problem is the destruction of the rainforests. This is removing the habitat
of many animals, like these gorillas, birds and plants. The number of animals in some
species is now very small and they may not exist at all for much longer.
The Worldwide Fund for Nature is an international organization. It started in Britain in 1961
and has now got a global network in 90 countries. It looks at all aspects of conservation
including animals, plants, forestry and control of pollution.
There are a number of projects in Britain which deal with endangered species. Here at Port
Lympne Animal Park there are elephants, lions, African hunting dogs and many others.
In this safe environment animals can breed – produce babies – and so increase
the numbers. The animals are then put back into their natural wild habitat.

Section 3
Animals born in Britain are now back in the Congo and Gabon in Africa. They are surviving
and adapting successfully to conditions there.
These Asian wild horses are another success story. They live in China and Mongolia. Thirty
years ago there weren’t any horses left except for a few in zoos. Now, every year several
go back to the grasslands of Asia. But there are still only 1,500 of them.
This is an African black rhino. There are only 3,000 wild rhinos and 200 in zoos.
The 23 rhinos here at Port Lympne is the largest collection outside Africa. Lessons learnt
from animals in Britain are very valuable in helping to maintain the numbers of rhinos
in the world.

At the weekend in Britain, millions of people take part in some kind of sporting activity.
Half of all men over 16 regularly participate in sport.
Even more people spend part of the weekend watching sport – especially football.
From August to April football is everywhere.
The top level of the game is professional football in the Premiership. We went to a training
session with a Premiership team from South East London, Charlton Athletic. The players
train every morning. In this session, the head coach worked on passing the ball quickly
and taking corners.
Football is played in schools and as a leisure activity. Both girls and boys play.

Section 2
Cricket is the main summer sport in Britain. Local teams play in towns and villages every
Saturday and Sunday from April to September.
Cricket is played between two teams of 11 people.
We went to Lord’s, the headquarters of English cricket, to see an indoor coaching session.
These ten-year-olds learn how to improve their cricket skills even in the winter.

Section 3
Tennis is another popular sport, especially in the summer after the famous Wimbledon
championships. There are tennis courts all over Britain.
Other popular sports are golf, swimming, cycling, keep fit and walking.
But there is no doubt that for most people football is the national sport.

Questions
Let’s discover what you know about sport.
What are the names of these sports?
Which is the headquarters of English cricket?
1 How many players are there in a cricket team?
2 Which is Britain’s most famous tennis tournament?
3 How many goals did Charlton score in the training session?

Section 1
The weather is a very popular topic of conversation in Britain. That’s because the weather
changes a lot.
Sixty-five per cent of all the days in Britain are overcast – dull, grey and often cold.
That’s 260 dull days. What do people find to talk about?
When the weather is good, people complain that it’s too hot.
When it rains, they say it’s too wet. When it isn’t sunny, they say it’s too cold.

Section 2
The seasons in Britain are fairly clear. Winter lasts from December to February. It’s cold
and wet but doesn’t often snow. Spring is from March to May. It starts to get a bit warmer
and there are more sunny days. The summer months are June, July and August when
it can be very hot. Then the autumn – September, October, November – often has foggy,
cold, wet days and the leaves fall from the trees.

Section 3
It’s not surprising that Britain has got one of the most important weather centres in
the world. The Met Office employs over a thousand people. They provide weather forecasts
for radio, television and newspapers – and on the Internet.
Two huge supercomputers analyse information from many sources including satellites.
This is very different from some of the early weather forecasts. These instruments were used
for the earliest weather forecasts. This is the first one – published in The Times in 1879.
Scientists at the Met Office make weather forecasts for the public and for special purposes
– military, shipping, airlines and many others.
The Met Office also looks at environmental issues such as global warming and climate
change. The computers can predict the tropical storms and hurricanes that cause so much
damage around the world.
The trouble is weather changes very quickly and so nobody ever believes the weather
forecast. They still go out in their shorts and get wet! But at least it’s something to talk
about.
