Question 1
Find the limit if it exists and clearly explain why, when it does not exist.
cos4 𝑥
(𝑎) 𝑙𝑖𝑚 (𝑏) 𝑙𝑖𝑚 √𝑥 − 𝑥 3
𝑥→0 5 + 2𝑥 ℎ→0

sin2 3𝑡 sin 𝜃
(𝑐) 𝑙𝑖𝑚 ln(ℎ2 − 2ℎ) (𝑑) 𝑙𝑖𝑚 (𝑒) 𝑙𝑖𝑚 𝜃+tan 𝜃
ℎ→2 𝑡→0 𝑡2 𝜃→0

Question 2
Calculate the limits where they exist of the following functions, and clearly
indicate why, when they do not exist.
I.
1 1 2 − |𝑥|
(𝑎) lim(2𝑥 + |𝑥 − 3|) (𝑏) lim+ ( − ) (𝑐) lim
𝑥→3 𝑥→0 𝑥 |𝑥| 𝑥→−2 2 + 𝑥

𝑥2 − 𝑥 −𝑥 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≤ −1 −𝑥 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≤ −1
(𝑑) lim { 𝑥 − 1 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≠ 1 (𝑒) lim {1 − 𝑥 2 𝑖𝑓 − 1 < 𝑥 < 1 (f) lim {1 − 𝑥 2 𝑖𝑓 − 1 < 𝑥 < 1
𝑥→1 x→−1 x→1
1 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 = 1 𝑥 − 1 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 1 𝑥 − 1 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 1

0 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 < 0
(g) lim ⟦𝑥⟧ + ⟦−𝑥⟧ (ℎ) lim 𝐻(𝑡) 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝐻(𝑡) = {
𝑥→−3 𝑥→1 1 𝑖𝑓𝑥 ≥ 0

II. For every limit calculated in Question 2 I. discuss the continuity of the
function at the specified point.

III. For what value of the constant c is the function f continuous on (−∞, +∞
).

𝑐𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 < 2
𝑓(𝑥) = {
𝑥 3 − 𝑐𝑥 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≥ 2

IV. Find the values of a and b that make f continuous everywhere.

𝑥2 − 4
𝑖𝑓 𝑥 < 2
𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥−2
𝑎𝑥 2 − 𝑏𝑥 + 3 𝑖𝑓 2 ≤ 𝑥 < 3
{ 2𝑥 − 𝑎 + 𝑏 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≥ 3

V. Use the Intermediate Value Theorem to show that there is a root of the
given equation in the specified interval.

(𝑎) 𝑥 4 + 𝑥 − 3 = 0, (1 , 2)
3
(𝑏) √𝑥 = 1 − 𝑥, (0 , 1)
(𝑐) tan 𝑥 = 2𝑥, (0 , 1.4)
