Situation 1.

Refer to figure. The butt connection shows 8 – 22 mm

diameter bolts spaced as follows: S1 = 40 mm; S2 = 80 mm,
S3 = 50 mm; S4 = 100 mm
Thickness of plates (top and bottom): t1 = 12 mm
Thickness of plate (middle): t2 = 16 mm
Steel strength and stresses are:
Yield strength, Fy = 248 MPa
Ultimate strength, Fu = 400 MPa
Allowable tensile stress on the gross area = 0.6Fy
Allowable tensile stress on the net area = 0.5Fu
Bearing stress on projected area, Fp = 1.5Fu
Allowable bolt shear stress, Fv = 120 MPa

Situation 3.

A tension member with an allowable tensile stress on the

net area of 0.5Fu is connected to the gusset plate using four
rivets having a diameter of 34mm. Assume the diameter of
the hole is 2mm more than the rivet diameter. It is required
to determine the value of b so that the net width along
rivets 1-2-3-4 is equal to the net width along 1-2-4.
8. Determine the value of b.
9. Determine the most critical net area.
10. The value of T without exceeding allowable tensile
stress on the net area.

1. Calculate the allowable tensile load, T (kN) based on

tension on the gross area of the plate.
2. Calculate the allowable tensile load, T (kN) based on
tension on the net area of the plate. Assume the hole
diameter is 3 mm more than the bolt diameter.
3. Calculate the allowable tensile load, T (kN) based on
bolt shear.
4. Calculate the allowable tensile load, T (kN) based on
bearing on the projected area on plate.

Situation 2.

The lap joint shown consists of bolts 22 mm in diameter in

25 mm-diameter holes. The plates are A36 steel with Fy =
250 MPa and Fu = 400 MPa. Use x1 = 50 mm, x2 = 160 mm,
x3 = 60 mm and plate thickness t = 12 mm for this problem.
The allowable stresses are:
Bearing stress on projected area, Fp = 1.5Fu
Tension on net area of plates, Ft = 0.5Fu
Shear on plates, Fv = 0.3Fu Situation 4.
Shear strength of bolt, Fv = 210 MPa The beam, W410 mm × 67 kg/m, with 9 mm web thickness
subjects the girder, W530 mm × 109 kg/m with 12 mm web
5. Determine the value of load P based on bolt shear. thickness to a shear load, P (kN). 2L – 90 mm × 90 mm × 6
6. Determine the value of load P based on bearing on mm with bolts frame the beam to the girder.
projected area on plate.
7. Determine the value of load P based on block shear. Given:
S1 = 40 mm S2 = 40 mm
S3 = 80 mm S4 = 110 mm
S5 = 40mm

Allowable Stresses are as follows:
Bolt shear stress, Fv = 120 MPa Problem for practice:
Bolt bearing stress, Fp = 480 MPa
Refer to figure. The butt connection shows 8 – 22 mm
diameter bolts spaced as follows:
S1=50mm; S2 = 100 mm
S3=50mm; S4 = 100 mm

Thickness of plates:
t1 (middle plate) = 12 mm;
t2 (top and bottom plates) = 10 mm
Steel strength and stresses are:
Yield strength, Fy = 248 MPa
Ultimate strength, Fu = 400 MPa
Allowable tensile stress on the gross area = 0.6Fy
Allowable tensile stress on the net area = 0.5 Fu
Allowable shear stress on the net area = 0.3 Fu
Allowable bolt shear stress, Fv = 140 MPa

Calculate the allowable tensile load, T (kN), under the

following conditions:

1. Based on bolt shear.

2. based on bearing on projected area on plate.
3. Based on tension on the gross area of the plate.
4. Based on tension on the net area of the plate.
5. Based on block shear strength.
11. Determine the allowable load, P (kN), based on the
shear capacity of the 4 – 22 mm diameter bolts (4 – d1).
12. Calculate the allowable load, P (kN), based on bolt
bearing stress on the web of the beam.
13. If P = 250 kN at an eccentricity, e = 50 mm determine
the tensile stress (MPa) on the critical bolt of the 8 – 22 mm
diameter bolts (8 – d2).
