Statement of the Problem

This study will seek to determine the relationship between reading level and problem-solving

skills of selected grade 10 students in Quezon National High School.

         Specifically, it will seek to answer the following questions:

1. What is the reading level of grade 10 students?

2. What is the level of Problem-Solving Skills of grade 10 students in terms of;

2.1. Procedural Knowledge; and

2.2. Metacognitive Knowledge?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the Reading Level and Problem-Solving Skills

of Grade 10 Students?

4. Based on the findings of the study, what instructional material may be developed to

improve the problem-solving skills of the students?

Research Instrument

         The researchers will use a frequency and percentage distribution, and rating score to

gather the necessary data. The statements are self-constructed test questionnaires wherein it has

to undergo a validation process. The research instrument will be used to determine the reading

level and problem-solving skills of grade 10 students. The researcher uses frequency and

percentage distribution to determine the reading levels of the respondent. Rating score test
questionnaire to determine the problem-solving skills in terms of procedural and metacognitive

knowledge. The respondent was guided by a range of scores to know if their solving problem

skills in terms of procedural and metacognitive knowledge is very low, low, moderate, or high.

These research instruments will determine if the reading level and problem-solving skills of

grade 10 have a significant relationship.

         The researcher guaranteed the privacy and confidentiality of the respondents and the

possibility of not providing their names and other personal details that are not important to the

study. The checklist and test questionnaire were presented by actual survey form to direct contact

with the respondents while observing the health protocols.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The data and information gathered were tallied, tabulated and analyzed statistically by the

researcher. In order to achieve the objectives in this study, the following statistical tools were

applied on the data collected.

         To determine the level of competence in solving worded problems and reading

comprehension of the respondents, mean was utilized. The formula is shown below

Formula

X = xn

Where:

X = Mean
x = Sum of Scores

N = Number of Respondents

 The computed mean of solving worded problems was interpreted using the following scale

below as cited from DepEd Order No. 31, s. 2020.

Range of Scores (%)         Level of Competence

90 and 100                          Outstanding

85-89                                   Very Satisfactory (Passed)

80-84                                   Satisfactory (Passed)

75-79                                   Fairly Satisfactory (Passed)

75 Below                             Did Not Meet Expectations (Failed)

The computed mean of reading comprehension was interpreted using the following scale

below as cited from Philippine Informal Reading Inventory Manual (2018).

Range of Scores (%)         Interpretation

90 and above                       Independent

75-89                                   Instructional

74 and below                           Frustration

In the second problem statement, the Rating Score will be used to Problem-solving skills

of grade 10 students in terms of procedural and metacognitive knowledge. Standard deviation

was utilized. The formula is shown below.

Formula

SD = (X-X)2n-1

Where:

SD = Standard Deviation

X = Scores of the Respondents

n = Number of Respondents

In the third problem statement, Pearson Product Correlation will be used to determine the

significant relationship between Reading Level and Problem-solving skills of grade 10 students

in terms of procedural and metacognitive knowledge. The formula is shown below.

Formula

r = nxy - (x)(y)n[x2 - (x)2][ny2 - (y)2

Where:

r = Correlation between solving worded problems and reading comprehension

x = Sum of  scores in solving worded problems

y = Sum of scores in problem-solving

xy = Sum of the product of solving worded problems and problem-solving

N = Number of respondents

x2 = Sum of squared of scores in solving worded problems

y2 = Sum of squared of scores in problem-solving

The computed Pearson-r was interpreted using the scale below.

Range Interval              Interpretation

0.00 to 0.20          Negligible Correlation

0.21 to 0.40        Low Correlation

0.41 to 0.60              Moderately Correlation

0.61 to 0.80         High Correlation

0.81 to0.99         Very High Correlation

1.00               Perfect Correlation
