PROPORTION IN DRAWING

Learning Competencies: Observe the importance of proportion

in drawing

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
1. identify the importance of proportion; and
2. draw a figure with proportion.

Let’s Recall

Directions: Provide the terms asked for in the following items. Write your answer
on your answer sheet.
1. It is a part of the workflow in the production of hand-drawn animation.
2-3 Another term for first drawing in traditional animation.
4. If the animation is successfully pencil tested and approved by the director, clean
versions of the drawings must be done.
5. He/she is responsible for the final line and finished look of the shot.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

PROPORTION IN DRAWING

Proportion is the principle of art that refers to relative size. The principles of
art differ from the elements of art. Proportion is largely about the relationship of the
size of one element when compared to another. When drawing or painting realistically,
proportion is important. If the proportions are incorrect, then the resulting image will
look less realistic or abstracted.

1
Alternatively, artists can use proportion for effect. By manipulating proportion,
the artist can make his/her subject seem strong, weak, funny, mysterious, etc. We can
exaggerate proportions to emphasize meaning or an element within the scene. For
example, a caricature artist distorts the proportion to create a stylized image of the
subject.

IMPORTANCE OF PROPORTION IN DRAWING

1. Be aware of details and really see things as they are

Most people see things without seeing what an artist sees. An artist notices all
the details and how they relate to the object as a whole and how that object relates to
other objects. In the still life painting below, the artist took note of how the gold cup on
the left was only about half as tall as the vase next to it. The terracotta vase next to
that was a few inches shorter. He also paid attention to the girth of each vase. The
silver platters on either side of the painting are similar, but the bowl part appears to be
of different depths and diameters.

If you are drawing cars and other vehicles, for example, a compact car is not
nearly going to come close to the size of the semi next to it. Let us say a typical house
cat and a tiger are best friends and sitting next to each other, your drawing of them
should reflect the drastic difference in size between the two. If you are drawing three
balls lined up in a row: a basketball, a soccer ball, and a baseball, it is easy to see that
they are all spheres. Reflecting the difference in size, the proportion of one to the other
is where you need to pay attention.

2
2. The importance of proportion in art is not specific to objects alone
It is important when drawing people. There are rules of proportion for drawing
the human figure.

3. Knowing when to break the rules

There are averages and then there are people who break those
averages. People who are over six feet tall, people who are very overweight,
toddlers, little people, etc. Some people have large heads or long faces. Some
have extra-large noses, large foreheads, or weak chins. It is up to you, as the
artist, to capture these proportions accurately or break the rules believably.
Caricature artists exaggerate proportions to reflect certain aspects of an
individual in a comical way.

4. Learning to notice details like proportion is a skill

Whether you use a measuring tool to help you or not, it is not something
to be overlooked. You simply cannot ignore the importance of proportion in art.
Take the time to practice seeing and determining how one object relates to other
objects next to it. Learning how to do this well will level up your drawings into
the realm of realism.

Let’s Apply

Directions: On a short bond paper, draw a girl in uniform with proportion.

3
Let’s Analyze

Directions: Analyze the image below and answer the following questions. Write your
answer on your answer sheet.

1. What can you tell about the image?

2. Does the image have a proportion? If your answer is no, why?

Let’s Try (Evaluation)

Directions: Identify the importance of proportion. Write ONE if it tells the number 1
importance of proportion, TWO if it’s number 2, THREE if it’s number 3, and FOUR if
it is the number four importance of proportion. Write your answer on your answer
sheet.

1. Learning to notice details like proportion is a skill.

2. Knowing when to break the rules.
3. The importance of proportion in art is not specific to objects alone.
4. Be aware of details and really see things as they are.
5. Most people see things without seeing as an artist sees.
6. There are rules of proportion for drawing the human figure.
7. Caricature artists exaggerate proportions to reflect certain aspects of an individual
in a comical way.
8. Take the time to practice seeing and determining how one object relates to other
objects next to it.
9. Learning how to do this well will level up your drawings into the realm of realism.
10. It is up to you as the artist to capture these proportions accurately or break the
rules believably.

Let’s Create

Directions: In a short bond paper, draw a figure with the proportion that you see at
your home.

Your output will be graded using the rubrics below.
